62.2: Invited Paper: Fast Electro‐Optical Switching in Polymer‐Stabilized Liquid Crystalline Blue Phases for Display Application

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate the sufficiently large electric field-induced birefringence and the micro-second response of the polymer-stabilized blue phases and the induced-isotropic phases without any surface treatment.
Abstract: Blue phases have two major advantages over commonly used nematic phases:1) the response is much faster, 2) the zero-electric field state is optically isotropic. We demonstrate the sufficiently large electric field-induced birefringence and the micro-second response of the polymer-stabilized blue phases and the induced-isotropic phases without any surface treatment.

TL;DR: In this article, the oxide semiconductor film has at least a crystallized region in a channel region, which is defined as a region of interest (ROI) for a semiconductor device.
Abstract: An object is to provide a semiconductor device of which a manufacturing process is not complicated and by which cost can be suppressed, by forming a thin film transistor using an oxide semiconductor film typified by zinc oxide, and a manufacturing method thereof. For the semiconductor device, a gate electrode is formed over a substrate; a gate insulating film is formed covering the gate electrode; an oxide semiconductor film is formed over the gate insulating film; and a first conductive film and a second conductive film are formed over the oxide semiconductor film. The oxide semiconductor film has at least a crystallized region in a channel region.

Abstract: An object of the present invention is to decrease the resistance of a power supply line, to suppress a voltage drop in the power supply line, and to prevent defective display. A connection terminal portion includes a plurality of connection terminals. The plurality of connection terminals is provided with a plurality of connection pads which is part of the connection terminal. The plurality of connection pads includes a first connection pad and a second connection pad having a line width different from that of the first connection pad. Pitches between the plurality of connection pads are equal to each other.

TL;DR: In this paper, the phase behavior and electro-optical Kerr effect of the optically isotropic liquid crystal composites, which require no surface treatment for device fabrication, were presented.
Abstract: In this paper, we present the phase behavior and electro-optical Kerr effect of the optically isotropic liquid crystal composites, which require no surface treatment for device fabrication. Anomalously large Kerr constant, more than 10−8 mV−2 and fast response, less than sub-milli-second were observed at a room temperature.

TL;DR: In this paper, a gate-insulated thin-film transistor with a halogen block in between the blocking layer and a gate insulator is described. But the block is not used to prevent the transistor from being contaminated with impurities such as alkali ions.
Abstract: A gate-insulated thin film transistor is disclosed. One improvement is that the thin film transistor is formed on a substrate through a blocking layer in between so that it is possible to prevent the transistor from being contaminated with impurities such as alkali ions which exist in the substrate. Also, a halogen is added to either or both of the blocking layer and a gate insulator of the transistor in order that impurities such as alkaline ions, dangling bonds and the like can be neutralized, therefore, the reliability of the device is improved.

TL;DR: This work shows the stabilization of blue phases over a temperature range of more than 60 K including room temperature (260–326 K), and demonstrates an electro-optical switching with a response time of the order of 10−4 s for the stabilized blue phases at room temperature.
Abstract: Blue phases are types of liquid crystal phases that appear in a temperature range between a chiral nematic phase and an isotropic liquid phase. Because blue phases have a three-dimensional cubic structure with lattice periods of several hundred nanometres, they exhibit selective Bragg reflections in the range of visible light corresponding to the cubic lattice. From the viewpoint of applications, although blue phases are of interest for fast light modulators or tunable photonic crystals, the very narrow temperature range, usually less than a few kelvin, within which blue phases exist has always been a problem. Here we show the stabilization of blue phases over a temperature range of more than 60 K including room temperature (260–326 K). Furthermore, we demonstrate an electro-optical switching with a response time of the order of 10−4 s for the stabilized blue phases at room temperature.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theory of the cholesteric blue phase is presented, assuming a first-order Cholesteric-isotropic transition, and it is shown that the planar helix structure becomes unstable at temperatures near the transition point.
Abstract: We present a theory of the cholesteric blue phase, assuming a first-order cholesteric-isotropic transition. We show, on the basis of the Oseen-Frank elasticity equations, that the planar helix structure, generally associated with the cholesteric phase, becomes unstable at temperatures near the transition point. It transforms into a phase characterized by a network of disclination lines.

TL;DR: In this article, the electro-optical properties of optically isotropic liquid-crystalline composites prepared by in-situ photo-polymerization of cross-linking monomers in the IOP of chiral liquid crystals were investigated.
Abstract: — The electro-optical properties of optically isotropic liquid-crystalline composites prepared by in-situ photo-polymerization of cross-linking monomers in the isotropic phase of chiral liquid crystals were investigated. The magnitude of the electric birefringence of the composites decreased as the chirality of the liquid crystal increased. The clear Kerr effect was observed for the composites with high chirality. A large Kerr constant, being relatively insensitive to temperature, was obtained for the composites even in a temperature range below the isotropic-chiral-nematic phase-transition temperature. The response time of the Kerr effect at room temperature was on the order of tens to hundreds of microseconds.
