A Cloud-Based Disassembly Planning Approach towards Sustainable Management of WEEE

TL;DR: Targeting sustainable WEEE management, this paper aims to propose a cloud-based approach for disassembly planning that provides a comprehensive and standardized service-oriented environment for distributed information sharing, disassembly modeling, evaluation and optimization.
Abstract: Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is becoming an important and challenging waste stream in terms of quantity and toxicity. Developing technical solutions for sustainable management of WEEE is becoming a global trend. Disassembly planning plays an important role in End-of-Life treatment of WEEE. Effective disassembly planning can improve the recovery rate and reduce the environmental impact of WEEE significantly. Targeting sustainable WEEE management, this paper aims to propose a cloud-based approach for disassembly planning. The approach provides a comprehensive and standardized service-oriented environment for distributed information sharing, disassembly modeling, evaluation and optimization.

TL;DR: A model for designing the disassembly process of the EVB pack for remanufacturing achieves the highest economic profitability from the process with the minimum environmental impact, providing significant insights into the recovery processes of WEEE, particularly Li-ion EVB packs.
Abstract: The rapidly-growing use of electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide will generate a huge quantity of end-of-life (EoL) products in the coming decades and, in consequence, there will be an accumulation of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) to be disposed of. Therefore, actions to favour the recovery of certain components from EVs, such as the electric vehicle battery (EVB), generates an opportunity for research. This paper presents a model for designing the disassembly process of the EVB pack for remanufacturing, obtaining the highest economic profitability from the process with the minimum environmental impact. Based on the disassembly sequence planning (DSP), the model provides the optimal disassembly level and the most suitable decision for the use of the disassembled components: reuse, remanufacturing, recycling or disposal. The lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery from the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron Hybrid is selected as the case study. Different case study scenarios based on the state of health (SOH) of the batteries are proposed. The results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the model, providing significant insights into the recovery processes of WEEE, particularly Li-ion EVB packs.

TL;DR: In this paper , a bucket brigades disassembly line balancing optimization method considering uncertainty is proposed, in which a cloud model is used to represent the uncertain disassembly time, and a new heuristic method based on the social engineering optimizer as an enhanced local search metaheuristic.
Abstract: A disassembly line is an industrialized and automated production line which should be scheduled with high production efficiency. Although many disassembly line balancing optimization studies are contributed recently, they increase or reduce the number of workstations to balance the disassembly line. From real-world managerial settings, an increase or decrease workstations, is too expensive and not realistic. The bucket brigades’ disassembly line is self-balancing and self-organizing, which is not constrained by the workstation beat time and only needs to distribute workers on the line according to certain rules to achieve line balancing after a period of time. In this article, a bucket brigades disassembly line balancing optimization method considering uncertainty is proposed, in which a cloud model is used to represent the uncertain disassembly time. The proposed model handles multiple objectives including smoothness, disassembly cost and disassembly energy consumption to be minimized. To solve this complex problem, this article innovates a new heuristic method based on the social engineering optimizer as an enhanced local search metaheuristic. Finally, a ball collector is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method and extensive analysis is done to compare the performance of proposed model with other recent algorithms.

TL;DR: In this article, a bibliometric literature review is used to assess the available treatment of waste coming from End of Life (EoL) products, pointed out as successful strategies by recognized literature.
Abstract: The current trends of waste present a global challenge pursuing sustainability. In response, recycling is broadly recognised as a solid strategy and the proper approach to attenuate the impact on the environment and human society. However, despite the current strides in recycling the remaining amounts of disposed products keep on increasing. Reversal of this trend is challenging, given the available recycling technology requires both, materials and energy, thus contributing to the depletion of resources. Therefore, for one aiming to cope with waste through recycling, efficient processes must be carefully selected. The current literature reveals a series of strategies, terminologies, processes and technologies, which may be confusing. The adopted methodology uses a bibliometric literature review to assess the available treatment of waste coming from End of Life (EoL) products, pointed out as successful strategies by recognised literature. The findings will deliver a framework of processes covering the different EoL strategies, their steps and processes. Thus, promoting a more sustainable waste handling due to the adoption of strategies and processes found more efficient, but yet reliable and available. In this sense, disruptive technologies are glimpsed as promising substitute solutions. The main contributions are. First, presents an approach for assessing diverse literature. Second, it identifies, clarifies, prioritises and delivers revised concepts and definitions to cope with waste more efficiently. Finally, summarises a vast amount of recycling processes along the EoL, revealing their precursors, constraints and also, the more efficient recycling processes with opportunities for future research.

TL;DR: A survey of the presently available literature on disassembly sequencing can be found in this article, including the papers that are closely related to this topic, and a slightly different approach can be observed, including level of detail, degrees of freedom, and the role of uncertainty.
Abstract: This paper is a survey of the presently available literature on disassembly sequencing, including the papers that are closely related to this topic. Disassembly theory is applied to complex products such as mechanical, electromechanical and electronic appliances. It is required for end-of-life processing and for maintenance and repair. Apart from these applications, disassembly is studied for supporting the analysis of assembly processes. Disassembly sequencing involves the search for all possible disassembly sequences and the selection of the optimum solution out of these. In each application, a slightly different approach can be observed, including level of detail, degrees of freedom, and the role of uncertainty. Disassembly sequencing also plays a major role in the modern design process and is an invaluable tool in concurrent engineering. Its connection with the more detailed or component level and the less detailed level or process level including logistics, is highlighted. This presentation of the state of the art is intended as a stimulus for further research in this interesting field.

TL;DR: In this article, a Mixed-Model U-shaped Disassembly Line with Stochastic Task Times has been proposed, which simultaneously tackles the interrelated problem of line balancing and model sequencing.
Abstract: Disassembly operations are inevitable elements of product recovery with the disassembly line as the best choice to carry out the same. In the light of different structures of returned products (models) and variations in task completion times, the process of disassembly could not be efficiently mapped on a simple straight line. Another important issue that needs consideration is the task-time variability pertaining to human factor. In order to resolve these complexities a Mixed-Model U-shaped Disassembly Line with Stochastic Task Times has been proposed in this article. A novel approach, Collaborative Ant Colony Optimization (CACO), has been utilized that simultaneously tackles the interrelated problem of line balancing and model sequencing. The distinguishing feature of the proposed approach is that it maintains bilateral colonies of ants which independently identifies the two sequences, but utilizes the information obtained by their collaboration to guide the future path. The approach is tested on benchm...
