Abstract: Often there is no relationship between yield and flower production in lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn,). This is because of the high rate of premature flower and, especially, fruit abscission between floral initiation and fruit maturation. There is the possibility that low female-to-male sex ratio, lack of pollinating insects, poor pollen transfer, low pollen viability and failure of pollen tube growth may also reduce fruit set, while poor fruit development may reduce final fruit size. Detailed studies are required on the effects of genotype and environment (temperature, soil moisture, humidity and mineral nutrition) on the growth and abscission of the flowers and fruit. Potential techniques for improving the setting and retention of fruit include varietal selection, withholding of nitrogen fertilization during flowering and early fruit growth (to reduce vegetative flushing), and the maintenance of plant moisture status (irrigation, overhead misting and windbreaks).

Abstract: Da in den letzten Jahren die Beobachtungen uber ein einkerniges Tapetum weiter zugenommen haben, liegt die Vermutung nahe, das dieses eine weitere Verbreitung hat, als bisher angenommen wurde. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden zur Prufung der jungst aufgeworfenen Frage, ob dem Vorkommen des einkernigen Tapetums eine gewisse systematische Bedeutung zukame, nicht nur die Angaben uber das einkernige Tapetum (vgl. die Zusammenstellung S. 15–17) kritisch gesichtet, sondern auch alle Angaben uber ein mehrkerniges Tapetum gesammelt und beide Vorkommen einander gegenubergestellt (vgl. den systematischen Teil). Es schien auch angezeigt, auf die verschiedenartigen Abweichungen von der normalen Tapetumentwicklung hinzuweisen, da in einzelnen solchen Fallen (bei weiblichen Pflanzen und pollensterilen Apomikten) ein Unterbleiben oder Verzogern von Kernteilungen in den Tapetumzellen beobachtet werden konnte, wodurch eine Einkernigkeit vorgetauscht sein kann. — Das Vorhandensein sowohl eines inneren als auch eines mehrschichtigen Tapetums ist in den vorliegenden Fallen nicht an eine bestimmte Kernzahl geknupft.

Abstract: HA, C. O., SANDS, V. E., SOEPADMO, E. & JONG, K., 1988. Reproductive patterns of selected understorey trees in the Malaysian rain forest: the sexual species. Investigations were carried out on the floral, fruit and seed biology, and the embryology of representatives of the Sapindaceae and Bombacaceae which occur in the lower canopy of the lowland rain forest of Peninsular Malaysia. Pollination studies indicated cross-compatibility and outbreeding in all species examined, associated with self-compatibility in the polygamous monecious Pometia pinnata and Allophylus cobbe and, to a limited extent, in the effectively dioecious Xerospermum intermedium. In these sapindaceous species, together with the self-incompatible androdioecious Nephelium lappaceum, the structurally hermaphrodite flowers were determined embryologically to be functionally female with no anther dehiscence. The self-incompatible Durio griffithii of the Bombacaceae, and X. intermedium, N. lappaceum and P. pinnata were shown by embryological studies to form a sexual zygote. The observations on these outcrossing species are considered in relation to their potential for gene exchange and their contribution to the maintenance of species diversity in the lowland rain forest.

Abstract: TOBE, H. & PENG, C.-I, 1990. The embryology and taxonomic relationships of Bretschneidera (Bretschneideraceae). We present the first report on the embryology of Bretschneidera, the only genus of Bretschneideraceae (which are one of 15 glucosinolate-producing families), to clarify its relationships. Embryologically Bretschneidera is characterized by the following features: ovule campylotropous, bitegmic and crassinucellate; outer integument thick, multiplicative and vascularized; embryo sac formation of the Allium type; seed exalbuminous; seed coat ‘exotestal’ with a palisade of columellar, thick-walled exotestal cells; mesotesta thick with the inner half aerenchymatous. These features suggest that Bretschneidera is distinct from any of the taxonomically related families but resembles both Hippocastanaceae and Sapindaceae (Sapindales) more closely than Moringaceae or Capparaceae (Capparales) which have been considered alternative allies, supporting most of the modern taxonomic treatments that place Bretschneidera as a separate family in Sapindales.
