A general mechanism of martensitic nucleation: Part I. General concepts and the FCC → HCP transformation

Abstract: Consideration of the martensitic nucleation process as a sequence of steps which take the particle from maximum to minimum coherency leads to the hypothesis that the first step in martensitic nucleation is faulting on planes of closest packing. It is further postulated that the faulting displacements are derived from an existing defect, while matrix constraints cause all subsequent processes to occur in such a way as to leave the fault plane unrotated, thus accounting for the observed general orientation relations. Using basic concepts of classical nucleation theory, the stacking fault energy is shown to consist of both volume energy and surface energy contributions. When the volume energy contribution is negative, the fault energy decreases with increasing fault thickness such that the fault energy associated with the simultaneous dissociation of an appropriate group of dislocations (e.g. a finite tilt boundary segment) can be zero or negative. This condition leads to the spontaneous formation of a martensitic embryo. For the specific case of the fcc → hcp martensitic transformation in Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, the defect necessary to account for spontaneous embryo formation at the observedM s temperatures may consist of four or five properly spaced lattice dislocations. Such defects are considered to be consistent with the known sparseness of initial martensitic nucleation sites.

Abstract: A significant increase in the research activity dedicated to high manganese TWIP steels has occurred during the past five years, motivated by the breakthrough combination of strength and ductility possessed by these alloys. Here a review of the relations between microstructure and mechanical properties is presented focusing on plasticity mechanisms, strain-hardening, yield stress, texture, fracture and fatigue. This summarized knowledge explains why TWIP steel metallurgy is currently a topic of great practical interest and fundamental importance. Finally, this publication indicates some of the main avenues for future investigations required in order to sustain the quality and the dynamism in this field.

Abstract: Steel with an ultimate tensile strength of 2500 MPa, a hardness at 600–670 HV and toughness in excess of 30–40 MPa m 1/2 is the result of exciting new developments with bainite. The simple process route involved avoids rapid cooling so that residual stresses can in principle be avoided even in large pieces. The microstructure is generated at temperatures which are so low that the diffusion of iron is inconceivable during the course of the transformation to bainite. As a result, slender plates of ferrite, just 20–40 nm thick are generated, giving rise to the extraordinary properties.

Abstract: It is supposed that a region within an isotropic elastic solid undergoes a spontaneous change of form which, if the surrounding material were absent, would be some prescribed homogeneous deformation. Because of the presence of the surrounding material stresses will be present both inside and outside the region. The resulting elastic field may be found very simply with the help of a sequence of imaginary cutting, straining and welding operations. In particular, if the region is an ellipsoid the strain inside it is uniform and may be expressed in terms of tabu­lated elliptic integrals. In this case a further problem may be solved. An ellipsoidal region in an infinite medium has elastic constants different from those of the rest of the material; how does the presence of this inhomogeneity disturb an applied stress-field uniform at large distances? It is shown that to answer several questions of physical or engineering interest it is necessary to know only the relatively simple elastic field inside the ellipsoid.
