A goal-oriented trust model for virtual organization creation

TL;DR: A goal-oriented trust model is proposed to evaluate the trust values of enterprises with the core constructs of a goal, a project, a task, and a capability to minimize the operating risk and guarantee the success of a VO.
Abstract: Virtual organization (VO) is a main organizational paradigm for enterprises to collaborate in the rapidly changing environment. Advances in information and communication technologies are accelerating collaboration among enterprises in different domains as well as unknown enterprises. In this environment, an enterprise faces more chances to cooperate with other enterprises through the internet. Trust is a key concept in many kinds of interactions, allowing an enterprise to act under uncertainty and with the risk of negative consequences. To minimize the operating risk and guarantee the success of a VO, trust evaluation of potential partners should be considered during the partner selection process. However, trust evaluation methods in the literature have limitations in applying them to small and medium enterprises because they are based on evaluation of human experts. In this paper, a goal-oriented trust model is proposed to evaluate the trust values of enterprises. In the context, trust is the probability that a trustee satisfies the goals when it completes assigned tasks. This paper introduces the concept of a goal-oriented trust model with the core constructs of a goal, a project, a task, and a capability. It further addresses an example of applying the proposed model to the partner selection process of a project-based VO creation.

TL;DR: The proposed method introduces the third-party trust evaluation model based on existing direct and indirect trust evaluation models as well as the time decay factor and quantifies the fuzzy indexes by using intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFS) to increase the credibility of service transaction trust evaluation in a CMfg system.
Abstract: After cloud manufacturing (CMfg) was put forward as new manufacturing model, the trust evaluation model is a concern by relevant research scholars, in order to ensure transactions in a CMfg system work well and the trust evaluation between transaction entities (ie., resource service providers and consumers) appear crucial. In a CMfg system, in view of the trust issue in resource service transactions, this paper extends the trust evaluation model in the existing related research and proposes a new method and model. In order to make the final trust evaluation values more practical, the proposed method introduces the third-party trust evaluation model based on existing direct and indirect (recommended) trust evaluation models as well as the time decay factor. It also quantifies the fuzzy indexes by using intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFS). Thereby, the trust evaluation model increases the credibility of service transaction trust evaluation in a CMfg system.

TL;DR: Critical success factors and key performance indicators are initially obtained from previous research related to information security investment, and the data collected through surveys at related companies and organizations are empirically analyzed utilizing the structural equation model.
Abstract: With the growing importance of information security due to the arrival of information society and the spread of the internet, information security is emerging as a tool to guarantee competitive advantage and is at the same time an indispensable requirement for stable business execution for companies and organizations. Additionally, the value of tangible and intangible assets that need to be protected as components of corporate assets are on the rise, where the importance of efficient and effective information asset management and information security investment is increasing for the organizations and companies managing them. However, despite an increase in the information security investment of an organization, there is a lack of systematic methodology pertaining to performance appraisals, which makes decision-making activities and determining means of improvement difficult. The existing financially focused information security investment is inadequate for systematic analyses and understanding due to the opportunity cost type characteristics of information security investment and the difficulty involved in presenting future strategic direction. This paper, considering the characteristics of the effects of information security investment, analyzes from a balanced score card perspective information security investment strategies and performance relationships. In short, critical success factors and key performance indicators are initially obtained from previous research related to information security investment, and the data collected through surveys at related companies and organizations are empirically analyzed utilizing the structural equation model.

TL;DR: This paper aims to develop a formal conceptual model for the design chain management from its informal definition by using the Environment-Based Design (EBD) theory and is called a wheel model since the model would evolve because of its internal conflicts.
Abstract: This paper aims to develop a formal conceptual model for the design chain management (DCM) from its informal definition by using the Environment-Based Design (EBD) theory. This effort is different from the existing approaches to developing conceptual models in that the model is derived step by step from a natural language description of the design chain management. The derived DCM model is called a wheel model since the model would evolve because of its internal conflicts. An industrial example is used to show how the proposed formalization can be used to solve a problem in the DCM.

TL;DR: An ontology-based multi-agent virtual enterprise (OMAVE) system is proposed to help SMEs shift from the classical trend of manufacturing part pieces to producing high-value-added, high-tech, innovative products.
Abstract: New advancements in computers and information technologies have yielded novel ideas to create more effective virtual collaboration platforms for multiple enterprises. Virtual enterprise VE is a collaboration model between multiple independent business partners in a value chain and is particularly suited to small and medium-sized enterprises SMEs. The most challenging problem in implementing VE systems is ineffcient and inflexible data storage and management techniques for VE systems. In this research, an ontology-based multi-agent virtual enterprise OMAVE system is proposed to help SMEs shift from the classical trend of manufacturing part pieces to producing high-value-added, high-tech, innovative products. OMAVE targets improvement in the flexibility of VE business processes in order to enhance integration with available enterprise resource planning ERP systems. The architecture of OMAVE supports the requisite flexibility and enhances the reusability of the data and knowledge created in a VE system. In this article, a detailed description of system features along with the rule-based reasoning and decision support capabilities of OMAVE system are presented. To test and verify the functionality and operation of this system, a sample product was manufactured using OMAVE applications and tools with the contribution of three SMEs.

TL;DR: The chapter concludes by examining some of the psychological, social, and institutional barriers to the production of trust, and describes different forms of trust found in organizations, and the antecedent conditions that produce them.
Abstract: Scholarly interest in the study of trust and distrust in organizations has grown dramatically over the past five years. This interest has been fueled, at least in part, by accumulating evidence that trust has a number of important benefits for organizations and their members. A primary aim of this review is to assess the state of this rapidly growing literature. The review examines recent progress in conceptualizing trust and distrust in organizational theory, and also summarizes evidence regarding the myriad benefits of trust within organizational systems. The review also describes different forms of trust found in organizations, and the antecedent conditions that produce them. Although the benefits of trust are well-documented, creating and sustaining trust is often difficult. Accordingly, the chapter concludes by examining some of the psychological, social, and institutional barriers to the production of trust. CONTENTS

TL;DR: This paper justifies a parsimonious interdisciplinary typology and relates trust constructs to e-commerce consumer actions, defining both conceptual-level and operational-level trust constructs.
Abstract: Trust is a vital relationship concept that needs clarification because researchers across disciplines have defined it in so many different ways. A typology of trust types would make it easier to compare and communicate results, and would be especially valuable if the types of trust related to one other. The typology should be interdisciplinary because many disciplines research e-commerce. This paper justifies a parsimonious interdisciplinary typology and relates trust constructs to e-commerce consumer actions, defining both conceptual-level and operational-level trust constructs. Conceptual-level constructs consist of disposition to trust (primarily from psychology), institution-based trust (from sociology), and trusting beliefs and trusting intentions (primarily from social psychology). Each construct is decomposed into measurable subconstructs, and the typology shows how trust constructs relate to already existing Internet relationship constructs. The effects of Web vendor interventions on consumer behaviors are posited to be partially mediated by consumer trusting beliefs and trusting intentions in the e-vendor.

TL;DR: The state of the art of trust in multi-agent systems is surveyed and an account of the main directions along which research efforts are being focused is provided and the areas that require further research are outlined.
Abstract: Trust is a fundamental concern in large-scale open distributed systems. It lies at the core of all interactions between the entities that have to operate in such uncertain and constantly changing environments. Given this complexity, these components, and the ensuing system, are increasingly being conceptualised, designed, and built using agent-based techniques and, to this end, this paper examines the specific role of trust in multi-agent systems. In particular, we survey the state of the art and provide an account of the main directions along which research efforts are being focused. In so doing, we critically evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of the main models that have been proposed and show how, fundamentally, they all seek to minimise the uncertainty in interactions. Finally, we outline the areas that require further research in order to develop a comprehensive treatment of trust in complex computational settings.
