TLDR
This meta-analysis examined current published studies to test whether eye movements significantly affect the processing of distressing memories and indicated that treatment fidelity acted as a moderator variable on the effect of eye movements in the therapy studies.

The role of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in medicine: addressing the psychological and physical symptoms stemming from adverse life experiences.

TL;DR: EMDR therapy provides physicians and other clinicians with an efficient approach to address psychological and physiologic symptoms stemming from adverse life experiences, and should therefore be evaluated for experiential contributors to clinical manifestations.

Psychotherapies for PTSD: what do they have in common?

TL;DR: Seven pioneers who have developed empirically supported psychotherapies for trauma-related disorders were asked to compose an essay of three parts, highlighting the identified commonalities and pointing to future directions such as trying to better understand the underlying mechanisms of action, and developing treatments that are tailored to the needs of different patient groups.
Journal ArticleDOI

How does EMDR work

TL;DR: In this article, the authors report on the findings of a long series of experiments that disproved the hypothesis that eye movements or other "dual tasks" are unnecessary, and they discuss the implications that this theory and the empirical findings may have for the EMDR technique.

Effects of visuospatial tasks on desensitization to emotive memories

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined repeated exposure to emotive memories using 18 unselected undergraduates and a within-subjects design with three exposure conditions (Eye Movement, Visual Noise, Exposure Alone) in random, counterbalanced order.

Statistical Power Analysis for the Behavioral Sciences

TL;DR: The concepts of power analysis are discussed in this paper, where Chi-square Tests for Goodness of Fit and Contingency Tables, t-Test for Means, and Sign Test are used.

Measuring inconsistency in meta-analyses

TL;DR: A new quantity is developed, I 2, which the authors believe gives a better measure of the consistency between trials in a meta-analysis, which is susceptible to the number of trials included in the meta- analysis.

Q1. What is the common method of pooling studies?

In this model, studies within subgroups are pooled with the random effects model, while tests for significant differences between subgroups are conducted with the fixed effects model.

Another possible limitation of this study is that the authors used standard methods to calculatethe confidence intervals around their effect sizes.

Of the 33 remaining studies, which all tested the effects of eye movement on a negativeor trauma memory, 5 were excluded because the eye movements condition was not compared to a no eye movement control.

Whilst the effect of eye movements in the non-therapy studies might be accounted forby a working memory model or by the eye movements triggering an orienting response, the key processes in the therapy studies are likely to be more complex.
