A microcomputer-based unique digital fault diagnosis scheme of radial transformer feeders

Abstract: This investigation aims to develop a comprehensive microcomputer based fault protection scheme for indicating various types of faults in a radial transformer feeder in subtransmission or distribution circuits and its protection against those faults. The type of fault in the feeder can also be determined by observing the phase angles of the primary currents of the transformer with which the feeder is connected at its secondary. This method dispenses off conventional electromagnetic relays and HRC fuses in feeder protection schemes. The developed system provides necessary information regarding the faulted phase and displays appropriate symbols on the display screen of the microcomputer about the type of fault

Abstract: This paper proposes a new single phase-to-ground short-circuit fault location algorithm for overhead three-phase radial distribution lines with single-ended measurements using the sinusoidal steady-state analysis method. By using this approach, two sinusoidal signals with different frequencies are first injected to the faulted line. By measuring the voltages and currents at the sending end and solving some nonlinear distributed-parameter equations, the distances and resistances of all possible fault candidates can be determined. A feature extraction method is derived to distinguish the actual fault from other pseudofault candidates. A fault locator based on the proposed approach is designed and implemented for a real-world problem. Physical model experiments and the field tests on radial distribution lines are presented to validate the proposed fault location approach

Abstract: Microgrids are indispensable at the distribution level network and is capable of operating in both grid connected and islanded modes. Integration of renewable sources in a microgrid is a viable solution to provide continuity of supply to customers. Due to bidirectional power flow, conventional protection strategies are not applicable to microgrids. Also the change in topology of the network poses a key challenge to protection engineers. This paper reviews the advent of microgrid and also the protection strategies that are incorporated in the system integrated with renewable energy systems (RES).

Abstract: Signaling power is crucial to an operational railway system as any signaling power failure results in serious operational and financial impacts. Therefore, intelligent condition monitoring and accurate fault location are important for the railway industry. This paper introduces a novel distributed insulation monitoring method for railway signaling power system that can monitor continually the resistive earth leakage current and determine the location of the leakage point by tracking the rectified current difference pattern. This method can be used for extended signaling power distribution networks with multiple branches and requires no external power supply or signal injection.

Abstract: The main objective involved with this paper consists of presenting the results obtained from the application of technical strategies for high-impedance fault practical experiments in power distribution systems for automation purposes. Such results can also be used to valid several methodologies employed in automatic identification and classification processes of faults in distribution lines, which can still contribute to increase both reliability and safety when practical experiments are necessary. The compilations of the results obtained from the application of these strategies are presented for validation purposes.

Abstract: This paper presents a three-phase power flow solution method for real-time analysis of primary distribution systems. This method is a direct extension of the compensation-based power flow method for weakly meshed distribution systems from single phase to three-phase, with the emphasis on modeling of dispersed generation (PV nodes), unbalanced and distributed loads, and voltage regulators and shunt capacitors with automatic local tap controls. The method proposed here is capable of addressing these modeling challenges while still maintaining a high execution speed required for real-time application in distribution automation systems. The paper also includes test results from the application of a computer program developed based on the proposed method to large primary electric distribution systems. >

Abstract: This paper presents a novel power flow formulation and an effective solution method for general unbalanced radial distribution systems. Comprehensive models are considered including lines, switches, transformers, shunt capacitors, cogenerators, and several types of loads. A new problem formulation of three-phase distribution power flow equations taking into account the radial structure of the distribution network is presented. A distinguishing feature of the new problem formulation is that it significantly reduces the number of power flow equations, as compared with the conventional formulation. The numerical properties as well as the structural properties of distribution systems are exploited resulting in a fast decoupled solution algorithm. The proposed solution algorithm is evaluated on three-phase unbalanced 292-bus and 394-bus test systems with very promising results.

Abstract: Signal processing hardware and software that can be used to improve the detection of certain power system faults using computer relays are discussed. Integrated systems and architectures for monitoring several fault-sensitive parameters have been investigated. A suggested architecture utilizing several processors is presented. Several fault-sensitive parameters for the detection of arcing faults are presented. A detection methodology based on these parameters is described, and a partial solution to the problem of directionality is discussed. The use of a knowledge-based environment to modify protection criteria is suggested. >

Abstract: Due to the challenges facing many utilities worldwide as a result of deregulation, the demand and importance of accurate fault location in distribution Systems has increased, principally to minimise line outages through effecting repairs expeditiously. The paper presents a novel approach in single-ended fault location for overhead distribution systems based on the concept of superimposed voltages and currents. It is clearly shown that the technique, which is interactive in nature, is highly robust to changes in local and remote source capacities and to the presence of load taps.
