TL;DR: The steady-state, the transient analysis and the large-signal operation are studied and the control is implemented combining a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and gain-scheduling technique.
Abstract: This paper studies the connection of a photovoltaic energy system to the AC mains by means of a 3-level voltage source inverter (VSI). A proposal for modeling and controlling the inverter is presented, in order to have full controllability of the power transfer and the DC-link voltage balance. The steady-state, the transient analysis and the large-signal operation are studied and the control is implemented combining a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and gain-scheduling technique. The method is verified using large signal, nonlinear discrete and averaged simulation models.

TL;DR: A novel approach for the connection of renewable energy sources to the utility grid using a three-level three-phase neutral-point-clamped voltage-source inverter with multivariable control law based on the linear quadratic regulator technique.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel approach for the connection of renewable energy sources to the utility grid. Due to the increasing power capability of the available generation systems, a three-level three-phase neutral-point-clamped voltage-source inverter is selected as the heart of the interfacing system. A multivariable control law is used for the regulator because of the intrinsic multivariable structure of the system. A current source (playing the role of a generic renewable energy source) is connected to the grid using a three-level inverter in order to verify the good performance of the proposed approach. Large- and small-signal d-q state-space averaged models of the system are obtained and used to calculate the multivariable controller based on the linear quadratic regulator technique. This controller simultaneously regulates the dc-link voltage (to operate at the maximum power point of the renewable energy source), the mains power factor (the power is delivered to the grid at unity power factor), and the dc-link neutral-point voltage balance. With the model and regulator presented, a specific switching strategy to control the dc-link neutral-point voltage is not required. The proposed controller can be used for any application, since its nature makes possible the control of any system variable. The good performance of the presented interfacing solution in both steady-state and transient operation is verified through simulation and experimentation using a 1-kW neutral-point-clamped voltage-source-inverter prototype, where a PC-embedded digital signal processor board is used for the controller implementation

TL;DR: In this article, the authors give a description of state of the art for distributed power generation systems (DPGS) based on renewable energy and explore the power converters connected in parallel to the grid which are distinguished by their contribution to the formation of the grid voltage and frequency and are accordingly classified in three classes.
Abstract: The introduction of microgrids in distribution networks based on power electronics facilitates the use of renewable energy resources, distributed generation (DG) and storage systems while improving the quality of electric power and reducing losses thus increasing the performance and reliability of the electrical system. The hierarchical control structure, which consists of primary, secondary, and tertiary levels for microgrids that mimic the behavior of the mains grid, is reviewed. The main objective of this article is to give a description of state of the art for distributed power generation systems (DPGS) based on renewable energy and explore the power converters connected in parallel to the grid which are distinguished by their contribution to the formation of the grid voltage and frequency and are accordingly classified in three classes. This analysis is extended focusing mainly on the three classes of configurations: grid-forming, grid-feeding, and grid-supporting. The article ends up with an overview and a discussion of the control structures and strategies to control distribution power generation system (DPGS) units connected to the network.

TL;DR: In this article, a state-space model for voltage source inverters with an internal current control loop, an outer power regulation loop, a measurement of average power and a phase-locked loop has been developed.
Abstract: Growth of distributed generation has led to distribution systems with a mixture of rotating machine generators and inverter interfaced generators. The stability of such networks needs to be studied through the analysis of state-space models, and so suitable models of inverters are needed to complement the well-established models of rotating machines. As machine models include features such as automatic voltage regulators and wash-out functions, the inverter model also includes phase-locking functions and internal control loops. The model for voltage source inverters with an internal current control loop, an outer power regulation loop, a measurement of average power and a phase-locked loop has been developed. The model is presented in detail and is formed with a state-vector, similar to that used for rotating machines. The model includes nonlinear terms but can be linearised about an operating point. The state-space model is verified against a component-level time-step simulation in Simulink/PLECS.

TL;DR: In this article, a neutral-point-clamped PWM inverter composed of main switching devices which operate as switches for PWM and auxiliary switching devices to clamp the output terminal potential to the neutral point potential has been developed.
Abstract: A new neutral-point-clamped pulsewidth modulation (PWM) inverter composed of main switching devices which operate as switches for PWM and auxiliary switching devices to clamp the output terminal potential to the neutral point potential has been developed. This inverter output contains less harmonic content as compared with that of a conventional type. Two inverters are compared analytically and experimentally. In addition, a new PWM technique suitable for an ac drive system is applied to this inverter. The neutral-point-clamped PWM inverter adopting the new PWM technique shows an excellent drive system efficiency, including motor efficiency, and is appropriate for a wide-range variable-speed drive system.

Abstract: A static VAr compensator (SVC) using a three-level GTO voltage source inverter (VSI) is presented for high-voltage, high-power applications. The three-level VSI has lower harmonic components and higher DC-link voltage than the two-level VSI and thus can be operated at lower switching frequency (f/sub sw/<500 Hz) without excessive harmonic contents. From the DQ-transformed equivalent circuit of the presented SVC system, DC and AC analyses are carried out to find the steady-state and the dynamic characteristics of the system. Based on the open-loop transfer function of the system, a controller is designed to achieve fast dynamic response. The experimental results confirm the theoretical analyses and controller design.
