TL;DR: In this paper, the butterfly exhaust valve system installed on the Yamaha RD400 Daytona Special was discussed, which is the only two-stroke cycle engine motorcycle in the controlled 400cc class.
Abstract: This paper discusses the butterfly exhaust valve system installed on the Yamaha RD400 Daytona Special, which is the only two-stroke cycle engine motorcycle in the controlled 400cc class. The paper also refers to the structure of the valve system and the principle of valve operation, as well as its effects on reducing exhaust emissions, improving brake specific fuel consumption, and increasing engine power at part-throttle.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new stratified charge combustion system called the Mitsubishi Combustion Process (MCP) has been developed, and the results show that carbon monoxide (CO) emission concetrations can be reduced by making the over-all air-fuel ratio leaner.
Abstract: It has been suggested that the poisonous emissions from spark ignited internal combustion engines can be reduced by lowering the combustion temperature Combustion under the lean mixture is one way to lower the combustion temperature To make the engine operate under the lean mixture, a new stratified charge combustion system called the Mitsubishi Combustion Process (MCP) (Miyake, 1972) has been developed This paper describes how the distribution of the air-fuel mixture, the cyclic combustion temperature and the effective rate of the heat release in the combustion chamber influence on the emission characteristics of this MCP engine The results show that carbon monoxide (CO) emission concetrations can be reduced by making the over-all air-fuel ratio leaner, and that, if in the early stages the combustion rate can be slowed down by controlling the distribution of the air-fuel mixture, then the nitrogen oxide (NO) emission concentration can be reduced extremely

TL;DR: Prior engine research is reviewed in selected areas to illustrate the kinds of measurements that have proved useful, and instrumentation predating the laser that has made those measurements possible is surveyed.
