Abstract: A finite-element method coupled with analysis of a noncavitating lifting surface was used to assess the performance of a marine propeller, including the thrust, torque, efficiency coefficients, and deflections. The formulation used displacements as unknowns in the structural part and the strength of the vortex as unknowns in the fluid part. A coupled matrix derived from the Bernoulli equation and hydrostatic pressure in terms of the strength, of the vortex enforced coupling between the fluid and the structure. The resulting matrix equation was unsymmetric and nonlinear; a Newton-Raphson procedure was used to solve this equation. The numerical results were compared with test data; computed and measured values agreed satisfactorily. We also investigated the effect of blade thickness on the performance and strength of the propeller. We did not consider the fatigue strengh of the propeller in this analysis.

TL;DR: In this paper, a rotating pretwisted cylindrical shell model with a presetting angle is established to investigate nonlinear dynamic responses of the aero-engine compressor blade.
Abstract: A rotating pretwisted cylindrical shell model with a presetting angle is established to investigate nonlinear dynamic responses of the aero-engine compressor blade. The centrifugal force and the Coriolis force are considered in the model. The aerodynamic pressure is obtained by the first-order piston theory. The strain–displacement relationship is derived by the Green strain tensor. Based on the first-order shear deformation theory and the isotropic constitutive law, nonlinear partial differential governing equations are derived by using the Hamilton principle. Discarding the Coriolis force effect, Galerkin approach is utilized to reduce nonlinear partial differential governing equations into a two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear system. According to nonlinear ordinary differential equations, numerical simulations are performed to explore nonlinear transient dynamic responses of the system under the effect of the single point excitation and nonlinear steady-state dynamic responses of the system under the effect of the uniform distribution excitation. The effects of the excitation parameter, damping coefficient, rotating speed, presetting angle and pretwist angle on nonlinear dynamic responses of the system are fully discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, a non-linear dynamic analysis of rectangular plates that undergo large rigid body motions and small elastic deformations is presented, where the rigid body displacement of the plate is defined by the translation and rotation of a selected plate reference.
Abstract: In this paper, a method for the non-linear dynamic analysis of rectangular plates that undergo large rigid body motions and small elastic deformations is presented. The large rigid body displacement of the plate is defined by the translation and rotation of a selected plate reference. The small elastic deformation of the midplane is defined in the plate co-ordinate system using the assumptions of the classical theories of plates. Non-linear terms that represent the dynamic coupling between the rigid body displacement and the elastic deformation are presented in a closed form in terms of a set of time-invariant scalars and matrices that depend on the assumed displacement field of the plate. In this paper, the case of simple two-parameter screw displacement, where the rigid body translation and rotation of the plate reference are, respectively, along and about an axis fixed in space, is first considered. The non-linear dynamic equations that govern the most general and arbitrary motion of the plate are also presented and both lumped and consistent mass formulations are discussed. The non-linear dynamic formulation presented in this paper can be used to develop a total Lagrangian finite element formulation for plates in multibody systems consisting of interconnected structural elements.

TL;DR: In this article, a finite element technique is used to determine the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of a cantilever plate mounted on the periphery of a rotating disc, where the plate is assumed to make any arbitrary angle with the plane of rotation of the disc.
Abstract: A finite element technique is used to determine the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of a cantilever plate mounted on the periphery of a rotating disc. The plane of the plate is assumed to make any arbitrary angle with the plane of rotation of the disc. The distributed centrifugal force is resolved into two components—one acting in the plane of the plate and the other normal to the plate. The stresses produced in the middle surface of the plate due to the in-plane forces are first determined. The increase in the bending stiffness of the plate elements due to these in-plane stresses is obtained in a manner similar to that used in the stability analysis of plates. The component of the distributed centrifugal force normal to the plate surface is added to the inertia force. From the results of computations carried out for various values of the aspect ratio, the speed of rotation, the disc radius and the setting angle, empirical formulae are derived giving the effect of these parameters on the natural frequencies. These empirical formulae are observed to be in agreement with the corresponding known formulae for rotating cantilever beams, when the aspect ratio is high.
