A Pilot Study of Indian Ragas-Based Music Therapy for Enhancement of Chronic Patient Health Condition

Abstract: International Diabetes Federation said that there is 5% of Indian population agonizes from diabetes, and it will rise to 123 million by 2040, also one study reveals that three Indians in ten suffered from hypertension and 89% of Indian population suffered from stress. There are various parameters which will impact on the medical health of a patient, and music is one of them. Emotions of individual by changing the timbre will affect by raga as said by ancient Indian classical musical experts some decades ago. Due to advancement in technology and day-by-day increasing work pressure on a human being due to competitions, there is need of an hour to improve health and reduces stress by other traditional way. This review work explores raga music therapy as scientifically the traditional way of medicine. A pilot study reveals that the raga music therapy will enhance health of diabetics, low BP, high BP, and stress of chronic disease patients. At the end mobile app development process flow is explained on the similar concept which may greatly help in improvement of different chronic patients’ health.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine if, and to what extent, daily listening to a certain type of music can help hypertensive patients lower their blood pressure (BP). Experiments were conducted at an elderly home. Thirty subjects aged 63-93 years participated in the study and were randomly assigned into either a music group (n=15) or a control group (n=15). There were no significant differences between the two groups in initial BP values, age, gender, or medication status. Subjects in the music group listened to selected music, 25 min every day for 4 weeks. BP was measured twice a week by a registered nurse with a sphygmomanometer during the 4-week study period and after the completion of the study. Four subjects dropped from the experiment due to a change of medical conditions or to personal reasons. After 4 weeks, the average decrease for the music group (n=12) in systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) was 11.8 mmHg (/>=0.008) and 4.7 mmHg (/>=0.218), respectively, whereas there was no significant changes in SBP or DBP for the control group (n=14). The results suggest that listening to a certain type of music serves to reduce high SBP and therefore music therapy may be an alterative for hypertension treatment.

Abstract: In this work, we propose a method to identify the ragas of an Indian Carnatic music signal. This has several interesting applications in digital music indexing, recommendation and retrieval. However, this problem is hard due to (i) the absence of a fixed frequency for a note (ii) relative scale of notes (iii) oscillations around a note, and (iv) improvisations. In this work, we attempt the raga classification problem in a non-linear SVM framework using a combination of two kernels that represent the similarities of a music signal using two different features-pitch-class profile and n-gram distribution of notes. This differs from the previous pitch-class profile based approaches where the temporal information of notes is ignored. We evaluated the proposed approach on our own raga dataset and Comp Music dataset and show an improvement of 10.19% by combining the information from two features relevant to Indian Carnatic music.

Abstract: Hypertension is a common clinical disease and a major risk to human health. Many clinical findings indicate that certain types of music can reduce blood pressure (BP), and music therapy is considered as an important part of anti-hypertension treatment. We integrate our former related research achievement into the new MP3 player, which can also detect the current BP value with a cuffless measurement method. According to the current BP value, the MP3 player selects certain types of music for playing in order to alleviate the hypertension of patients.

Abstract: Raga is one of the fundamental musical concept in Indian music. It is a group of swaras (musical notes) comprising of many features and qualifiers and is described as melodic concept which is led to blossom by the musician. This paper proposes a novel method for identification of raga in Hindustani music. We have identified different key parameters for raga identification and fuzzy sets have been used for its representation. Soft computing techniques are being used for recognition of raga. This work demonstrates a modified approach by combining parameters of music with soft computing.Raga recognition has been analysed through soft computing and evaluation of the proposed technique shows that reasonable accuracy has been achieved.

Abstract: Brain waves are studied, investigated from the last century to detect the psycho-physiological problems, like Epilepsy, Alzheimer, spinal cord injuries and others. But the stress is the common thing which can be recognize with brainwave using EEG (Electroencephalogram) technique, simply by placing the Electrodes on scalp. The musical track is listening to destress a person, this is observed with different Brain waves. The raw EEG signal categorized depending upon frequency ranges from 0.5Hz to 30Hz. After applying the therapy Brainwave changes from one wave to other this is performed and analyzes with experimental setup. The objective of this paper is to recognize the stress with non-invasive technique and controlling it with musical tracks results shows the feasibility in developing system.
