A review of loading conditions for railway track structures due to train and track vertical interaction

Abstract: Train and track interactions during services normally generate substantial forces on railway tracks. Such forces are transient by nature and of relatively large magnitude and are referred to as impact loading. There has been no comprehensive review of the typical characteristics of the loading conditions for railway track structures, in particular, impact loads due to the wheel/rail interaction, published in the literature. This paper presents a review of basic design concepts for railway tracks, abnormalities on tracks, and a variety of typical dynamic impact loadings imparted by wheel/rail interaction and irregularities. The characteristics of typical impact loads due to wheel and rail irregularities, e.g. rail corrugation, wheel flats and shells, worn wheel and rail profiles, bad welds or joints, and track imperfections, are presented with particular emphasis on the typical shapes of the impact load waveforms generally found on railway tracks. Abstract: This paper presents an automatic method for detecting railway surface defects called “squats” using axle box acceleration (ABA) measurements on trains. The method is based on a series of research results from our group in the field of railway engineering that includes numerical simulations, the design of the ABA prototype, real-life implementation, and extensive field tests.We enhance the ABA signal by identifying the characteristic squat frequencies, using improved instrumentation for making measurements, and using advanced signal processing. The automatic detection algorithm for squats is based on wavelet spectrum analysis and determines the squat locations. The method was validated on the Groningen–Assen track in The Netherlands and accurately detected moderate and severe squats with a hit rate of 100%, with no false alarms. The methodology is also sensitive to small rail surface defects and enables the detection of squats at their earliest stage. The hit rate for small rail surface defects was 78%.

Abstract: A review is presented of dynamic modelling of railway track and of the interaction of vehicle and track at frequencies which are sufficiently high for the track's dynamic behaviour to be significant. Since noise is one of the most important consequences of wheel/rail interaction at high frequencies, the maximum frequency of interest is about 5kHz: the limit of human hearing. The topic is reviewed both historically and in particular with reference to the application of modelling to the solution of practical problems. Good models of the rail, the sleeper and the wheelset are now available for the whole frequency range of interest. However, it is at present impossible to predict either the dynamic behaviour of the railpad and ballast or their long term behaviour. This is regarded as the most promising area for future research.
