A review of the field of robots in education can be found in this paper, where several prior ventures in the area are discussed (post-2000) with the help of classification criteria including domain of the learning activity, location of the activity, role of the robot, types of robots and types of robotic behaviour.Abstract:
Robots are becoming an integral component of our society and have great potential in being utilized as an educational technology. To promote a deeper understanding of the area, we present a review of the field of robots in education. Several prior ventures in the area are discussed (post-2000) with the help of classification criteria. The dissecting criteria include domain of the learning activity, location of the activity, the role of the robot, types of robots and types of robotic behaviour. Our overview shows that robots are primarily used to provide language, science or technology education and that a robot can take on the role of a tutor, tool or peer in the learning activity. We also present open questions and challenges in the field that emerged from the overview. The results from our overview are of interest to not only researchers in the field of human–robot interaction but also administration in educational institutes who wish to understand the wider implications of adopting robots in education.read more

Social robots for education: A review
Tony Belpaeme,Tony Belpaeme,James Kennedy,Aditi Ramachandran,Brian Scassellati,Fumihide Tanaka +5 more
TL;DR: The potential of social robots in education is reviewed, the technical challenges are discussed, and how the robot’s appearance and behavior affect learning outcomes are considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Interactions With Robots: The Truths We Reveal About Ourselves.
TL;DR: Engineers are trying to build robots that look and behave like humans and thus need comprehensive knowledge not only of technology but also of human cognition, emotion, and behavior, driving engineers to study human behavior toward other humans and toward robots.
Journal ArticleDOI
How to learn about teaching: An evolutionary framework for the study of teaching behavior in humans and other animals.
TL;DR: It is argued that disputes about the nature and prevalence of teaching across human societies and nonhuman animals are based on a number of deep-rooted theoretical differences between fields, as well as on important differences in how teaching is defined.

A Review on the Use of Robots in Education and Young Children.
TL;DR: The effectiveness of using robots in studies published within the last decade is assessed as having four sub-factors--the study type done by the researcher, the influence of the robots on the behaviour and development of students, the perception of stakeholders (parents, educators and children) about the robots, and the importance of design or robot appearance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Robots As Intentional Agents: Using Neuroscientific Methods to Make Robots Appear More Social.
TL;DR: The argument that the likelihood of artificial agents being perceived as social companions can be increased by designing them in a way that they are perceived as intentional agents that activate areas in the human brain involved in social-cognitive processing is put forward.

Mindstorms: Children, Computers, And Powerful Ideas
TL;DR: The gears of my childhood as discussed by the authors were a source of inspiration for many of the ideas we use in our own work, such as the notion of assimilation of knowledge into a new model.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Extended Mind
TL;DR: The authors advocate an externalism about mind, but one that is in no way grounded in the debatable role of external reference in fixing the contents of our mental states, rather, they advocate an *active externalism*, based on the active role of the environment in driving cognitive processes.

The Psychology of the Child
TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss factors in mental development, including the development of perception, concepts, and operations of thought and interpersonal relations, as well as the three levels in the transition from action to operation.
Journal ArticleDOI
A survey of socially interactive robots
TL;DR: The context for socially interactive robots is discussed, emphasizing the relationship to other research fields and the different forms of “social robots”, and a taxonomy of design methods and system components used to build socially interactive Robots is presented.
