A study of capillary-compensated geometrically imperfect six-pocket hybrid journal bearing of various geometric shapes of recess

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical study of geometric imperfections of journal and its influence on the performance of capillary-compensated six-pocket hybrid journal bearing configurations with different geometric shapes of recess is presented.
Abstract: The present paper deals with the theoretical study of geometric imperfections of journal and its influence on the performance of capillary-compensated six-pocket hybrid journal bearing configurations with different geometric shapes of recess. The analysis includes the geometric imperfections of journal such as barrel shape, bellmouth shape, and circumferential undulations and various geometric shapes of recess (square, circular, elliptical, triangular) of same pocket area. The governing Reynolds equation is solved using Galerkin’s technique. The numerically simulated results indicate that the selection of suitable geometric shape of recess is important to have the least influence of different geometric imperfections of journal on the bearing performance.

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of journal's geometric imperfections on the performance of a capillary compensated two-lobe hybrid journal bearing system was investigated, and numerically simulated results indicated that non-circularity of bearing and barrel shape irregularity significantly increase the values of S¯zz,C¯zz and ω¯th by a factor 36.47, 51.34 and 18.52%, respectively, with respect to the base bearing (circular ideal journal bearing) operating with non-Newtonian lubricant.
Abstract: The present paper investigates the influence of journal’s geometric imperfections on the performance of capillary compensated two-lobe hybrid journal bearing system. Different geometric imperfections of journal, viz. barrel, bellmouth and circumferential waviness have been included in the study. A parameter called offset factor has been included in the analysis which distinguishes between two lobe and circular journal bearing. Further, the Reynolds equation has been modified by using power law model in order to deal with non-Newtonian effect of the lubricant. The numerically simulated results indicate that non-circularity of bearing and barrel shape irregularity significantly increase the values of S¯zz,C¯zz and ω¯th by a factor 36.47, 51.34 and 18.52%, respectively, with respect to the base bearing (circular ideal journal bearing) operating with non-Newtonian lubricant.

Abstract: In this study, four hybrid bearings having different geometric configurations were experimentally tested for their static and dynamic characteristics, including flowrate, load capacity, rotordynamic coefficients, and whirl frequency ratio. The four bearings included a square-recess, smooth-land, radial-orifice bearing (baseline), a circular-recess bearing, a triangular-recess bearing, and an angled-orifice bearing. Each bearing had the same orifice diameter rather than the same pressure ratio. Unique to these test results is the measurement of the added mass terms, which became significant in the present tests because of high operating Reynolds numbers. Comparisons of the results were made between bearings to determine which bearing had the best performance
