TLDR
This work analyses the security vulnerabilities of Ethereum smart contracts, providing a taxonomy of common programming pitfalls which may lead to vulnerabilities, and shows a series of attacks which exploit these vulnerabilities, allowing an adversary to steal money or cause other damage.
Abstract
Smart contracts are computer programs that can be correctly executed by a network of mutually distrusting nodes, without the need of an external trusted authority. Since smart contracts handle and transfer assets of considerable value, besides their correct execution it is also crucial that their implementation is secure against attacks which aim at stealing or tampering the assets. We study this problem in Ethereum, the most well-known and used framework for smart contracts so far. We analyse the security vulnerabilities of Ethereum smart contracts, providing a taxonomy of common programming pitfalls which may lead to vulnerabilities. We show a series of attacks which exploit these vulnerabilities, allowing an adversary to steal money or cause other damage.

Formal Specification and Verification of Solidity Contracts with Events

TL;DR: This paper presents a source-level approach for the formal specification and verification of Solidity contracts with the primary focus on events, which allows specification of events in terms of the on-chain data that they track, and predicates that define the correspondence between the blockchain state and the abstract view provided by the events.

Towards a Formally Verified EVM in Production Environment

TL;DR: The behavior of EVM is defined in Why3, a platform for deductive program verification, which facilitates the verification of different properties and serves as a powerful analysis basis for EVM and smart contracts.

Blockchain and Smart Contracts: A Revolution

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the peer-to-peer network that forms the blockchain, from its origin to the most recent developments and applications in various industries and sectors (mostly in supply chain management, energy, education, and medicine) as well as the different forms it can adopt, primarily through smart contracts.

GVD-net: Graph embedding-based Machine Learning Model for Smart Contract Vulnerability Detection

TL;DR: Li et al. as mentioned in this paper proposed a GVD-net model for smart contract vulnerability detection, which consists of preprocessing section, backbone-net and detection section, and it can detect three types of vulnerability (arithmetic issues, access control and asset frozen).

Oracle-Supported Dynamic Exploit Generation for Smart Contracts

TL;DR: ContraMaster as discussed by the authors is an oracle-supported dynamic exploit generation framework for smart contracts, which uses data-flow, control-flow and the dynamic contract state to guide its mutations.

Ethereum: A Secure Decentralised Generalised Transaction Ledger

Gavin Wood
TL;DR: Ethereum as mentioned in this paper is a transactional singleton machine with shared state, which can be seen as a simple application on a decentralised, but singleton, compute resource, and it provides a plurality of resources, each with a distinct state and operating code but able to interact through a message-passing framework with others.

Making Smart Contracts Smarter

TL;DR: This paper investigates the security of running smart contracts based on Ethereum in an open distributed network like those of cryptocurrencies, and proposes ways to enhance the operational semantics of Ethereum to make contracts less vulnerable.
