A thyristor-chopper-controlled self-excited synchronous machine for isolated power supply

TL;DR: In this paper, a potential transformer and a thyristor-controlled ac-to-dc converter are used to derive the excitation energy of a synchronous machine from its output terminals.
Abstract: The description of a scheme where all the excitation energy of a synchronous machine is derived from its output terminals through a potential transformer and a thyristor-controlled ac-to-dc converter is presented. The circuit is controlled by a strong feedback loop and performs the functions of both the conventional exciter and an automatic voltage regulator. The excitation energy is supplied in the form of dc voltage pulses of constant amplitude and variable width at constant frequency. The scheme is meant for isolated power supply and requires only a 12-V dry cell for triggering a pair of thyristors. Some experimental difficulties are also discussed.

TL;DR: The use of an auxiliary damping signal into the voltage regulator may become especially important for machines that are inherently lightly damped as mentioned in this paper, and the application of static exciters to waterwheel generators requires an awareness of these possible changes.
Abstract: It is generally accepted that a high-performance excitation system may reduce the effective internal damping of a synchronous machine. Alternately, studies and field tests indicate that a fast-acting excitation system offers the best opportunity for increased damping through the use of an auxiliary signal into the voltage regulator. The application of static exciters to water-wheel generators requires an awareness of these possible changes in machine damping. The use of an auxiliary damping signal into the voltage regulator may become especially important for machines that are inherently lightly damped.

Abstract: The application of thyristor converters to the excitation of large generators as shunt connected solid-state exciters is described. Considerations important during the planning stage are discussed and some important exciter design details are given. The importance of the topic, control of power system stability by adjustment of generator excitation, is highlighted by reference to many other papers.

Abstract: This paper discusses the improved stability performance offered by a low rise time, high response excitation system to be installed on Unit No. 1 at the Diablo Canyon Site. Such an excitation system is provided by a low time constant rotating exciter with minor loop current feedback.
