TLDR
Diagnostic criteria for ACLF was established and showed that it is distinct from AD, based not only on the presence of organ failure(s) and high mortality rate but also on age, precipitating events, and systemic inflammation.About:

Burden of liver diseases in the world
TL;DR: The global prevalence of viral hepatitis remains high, while drug-induced liver injury continues to increase as a major cause of acute hepatitis.
Journal ArticleDOI
EASL Clinical Practice Guidelines for the management of patients with decompensated cirrhosis
Paolo Angeli,Mauro Bernardi,Càndid Villanueva,Claire Francoz,Rajeshwar P. Mookerjee,Jonel Trebicka,Aleksander Krag,Wim Laleman,Pere Ginès +8 more
TL;DR: The panel of experts, having emphasised the importance of initiating aetiologic treatment for any degree of hepatic disease at the earliest possible stage, extended its work to all the complications of cirrhosis which had not been covered by the European Association for the Study of the Liver guidelines.

TL;DR: The original proposed definition of ACLF was found to withstand the test of time and identify a homogenous group of patients presenting with liver failure, which led to the development of the final AARC consensus.

The global burden of liver disease: The major impact of China
TL;DR: The epidemiology and characteristics of liver diseases and liver‐related research in China are discussed and many challenges remain that must be tackled collaboratively.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cirrhosis-associated immune dysfunction: Distinctive features and clinical relevance
TL;DR: Cirrhosis-associated immune dysfunction phenotypes switch from predominantly "pro-inflammatory" to predominantly "immunodeficient" in patients with stable ascitic cirrhosis and in Patients with severely decompensated cirrhoses and extra-hepatic organ failure (e.g. acute-on-chronic liver failure), respectively.

The SOFA (Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment) score to describe organ dysfunction/failure. On behalf of the Working Group on Sepsis-Related Problems of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine.
Jean Louis Vincent,R. Moreno,Jukka Takala,Sheila Willatts,A. de Mendonça,Hajo A. Bruining,C. K. Reinhart,P. M. Suter,L. G. Thijs +8 more
TL;DR: The ESICM developed a so-called sepsis-related organ failure assessment (SOFA) score to describe quantitatively and as objectively as possible the degree of organ dysfunction/failure over time in groups of patients or even in individual patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transection of the oesophagus for bleeding oesophageal varices
TL;DR: Emergency ligation of bleeding oesophageal varices using the Milnes Walker technique was performed in 38 patients, and in patients with good preoperative liver function this rose to 71% and the simple scoring system for grading the severity of disturbance of liver function was found to be of value in predicting the outcome of surgery.

Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) and allocation of donor livers
Russell H. Wiesner,Erick B. Edwards,Richard B. Freeman,Ann M. Harper,Ray Kim,Patrick S. Kamath,Walter K. Kremers,John R. Lake,Todd K. Howard,Robert M. Merion,Robert A. Wolfe,Ruud A.F. Krom,Paul M. TL;DR: Data suggest that the MELD score is able to accurately predict 3-month mortality among patients with chronic liver disease on the liver waiting list and can be applied for allocation of donor livers.

Disease Tolerance as a Defense Strategy
TL;DR: The notion of disease tolerance has been introduced into the conceptual tool kit of immunology as discussed by the authors, which will expand our understanding of infectious diseases and host pathogen interactions. But, it has not yet been applied to human studies.
