Abstract: 1.2 billion people around the world lack access to electricity and 2.7 billion people still cook with traditional biomass (IEA, 2015). That “energy poverty” condition hinders economic and social development of the people in the base of the pyramid (BOP) of the world income. Technical solutions providing clean, affordable and reliable energy services to this target group already exist but still need to be improved to perform better. The development of business models to support the technical solutions is the key to entering BOP markets, but those business models to date are not entirely successful due to challenging condition dealing with BOP market, and only a few works of literature discusses specifically business model to support the availability of the modern energy access which is also the goal number seven of United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. The frugal energy innovation (FEI) can be a solution to deal with energy poverty problem, but there are many barriers in implementing the FEI principles, for instance, little number of financial access for the people in the base of the pyramid (BOP) and limited access to distribute the technologies to the BOP areas. This study suggests that in order to implement the FEI principles, a frugal business model can be used by the BOP ventures to provide clean energy access for BOP people in developing countries. Therefore, this graduation project is conducted to analyse the principles of frugal energy innovation in the context of a business model which is applicable for BOP ventures operating in the energy sector. We utilise a business model framework namely business model canvas (BMC) by Osterwalder and Pigneur, which is one of the most well-known business model frameworks. We imply the principles of frugal energy innovation (FEI) and the BOP approach into the BMC to design a Frugal Business Model Canvas (FBMC) framework. The FBMC exhibits the means of applying energy principles to each element within the business model. It encompasses and underlines ancillary components next to the original nine elements of BMC with five additional components that consist of adoption factors, mission value, objective, impact measure and output measure.

Abstract: The importance of growing economic powerhouses like India and China is increasing. Consequently, cost effective products and services and therefore, Frugal Innovations provide attractive business opportunities for globally operating companies. However, not all organizations seem to recognize these opportunities for what they are. The question arises if key decision makers have the right mindset to initiate and support respective innovation projects within their organizations. We take on our previous research on the Frugal Mindset and present the results of two recent studies to further develop our theory. In our first study we generate items based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour by conducting a systematic literature review of 95 publications and validate as well refine this approach in a focus group discussion with 16 experts on Frugal Innovation. Consequently, we test our research instrument for practicability, comprehensibility and further refine the items in a small scale pilot study including 8 follow-up interviews with managers from 2 multi-national companies. Based on this procedure we present a research model, a measurement instrument and first qualitative insights on the Deliberative Fugal Mindset.

Abstract: This paper aims to introduce, define and propose a model for the concept of “frugal creativity” (FC), as the front end of the frugal innovation (FI) process. Modeling FC as a planned behavior makes it useful to large organizations who may wish to strategically promote such behavior.,Identifying common themes from the literature, the authors propose a comprehensive definition of FI. Using this definition, they define FC. Next, a model for FC is proposed based on the theory of planned behavior.,The conceptual model proposes that frugal creativity intention (FCI) can be predicted by the prosocial motivation, dissatisfaction with status-quo and the threat-opportunity perception of resource constraints of an individual. The authors further propose that FCI would translate into FC more frequently when work is perceived as meaningful.,The proposed model opens avenues for further conceptual and empirical research in the area, although it first requires empirical validation.,The model of FC as a planned behavior can help multinationals, established firms or governments, seeking to use FI as a deliberate strategic choice, to develop suitable human capital and context for FI.,First, the authors propose a comprehensive definition for FI by consolidating related constructs. Second, they introduce the concept of FC as the idea generation stage of FI. Third, they propose a model for FC as a planned behavior. To the authors’ knowledge, the last two have not been attempted earlier.

Abstract: Sustainable development necessitates the management of progress in science and technology for society's betterment while preserving Earth's resources. In this regard, the appearance in recent years of low-cost sophisticated products consuming resources economically is a force for good. This effort terms each of these products as an advanced frugal innovation to highlight the frugality in resource consumption during the realization of these innovations through advances in various scientific disciplines. Other than 25 examples of advanced frugal innovations in a wide range of sectors from rural electrification to particle physics, a framework for the systematic realization of such innovations for sustainable development has also been described. The innovations showcased bring out the use of advances in science and technology or cutting edge knowledge for creating these low-cost sophisticated products. Moreover, the need for innovators typically with training in advanced knowledge areas to handle the sophistication in technology for the successful fruition of these innovations is also discussed. This effort supports the frugal design and frugal engineering of innovations, whether grassroots or the advanced type, through sound scientific principles for the creation of robust products, especially where the human life is at stake, in various sectors for all-round sustainable development.
