Age as a Confounding Factor for the Accurate Non-Invasive Diagnosis of Advanced NAFLD Fibrosis

TL;DR: The NFS and FIB-4 scores have similar accuracy for advanced fibrosis in patients aged >35 years, however, the specificity forAdvanced fibrosis is unacceptably low in patients ages aged ≥65 years, resulting in a high false positive rate.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Experts reached consensus that NAFLD does not reflect current knowledge and metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease "MAFLD" was suggested as a more appropriate overarching term and opens the door for efforts from the research community to update the nomenclature and sub-phenotype the disease in order to accelerate the translational path to new treatments.

TL;DR: NAFLD and NASH represent a large and growing public health problem and efforts to understand this epidemic and to mitigate the disease burden are needed, if obesity and DM continue to increase at current and historical rates.

TL;DR: The current state of the noninvasive assessment of liver disease in NAFLD is summarized, and an expert synthesis of how these nonin invasive tools could be utilized in clinical practice is provided.

TL;DR: MRE and SWE may have the highest diagnostic accuracy for staging fibrosis in NAFLD patients, and among the four noninvasive simple indexes, NFS and FIB‐4 probably offer the best diagnostic performance for detecting AF.

  • ...However, McPherson et al.((18)) reported that the occurrence rate of AF (stages 3-4) was higher in patients who were over 56 years of age and demonstrated that the ROC values of FIB-4 and NFS were greater than those of aspartate aminotransferase to alanine aminotransferase ratio for predicting fibrosis in NAFLD patients of different ages....

TL;DR: The prevalence of hepatic steatosis was greater in men than women among whites, but not in blacks or Hispanics, and significant ethnic and sex differences in the prevalence may have a profound impact on susceptibility to Steatosis‐related liver disease.
