TLDR
In this paper, the authors provide a link in landing gear technology from historical practices to modern design trends, also considering the necessary airfield interface with gear design, and lead students and engineers from the initial concepts of landing gear design through to the final detail design.
Abstract
This text aims to lead students and engineers from the initial concepts of landing gear design through to the final detail design. It provides a link in landing gear technology from historical practices to modern design trends, also considering the necessary airfield interface with gear design.

Aircraft Design: A Conceptual Approach

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an overview of the design process of an aircraft from a conceptual sketch, including sizing from a Conceptual Sketch and initial sizing of the aircraft.
Journal ArticleDOI

Aircraft Landing Gear Dynamics: Simulation and Control

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors give an overview of the landing gear requirements and illustrate landing gear operational conditions, i.e., the shimmy problem, the dynamics at touch down and at ground roll.
Journal ArticleDOI

Magnetorheological landing gear: 1. A?design methodology

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a design methodology that enables an MR landing gear to be optimized, both in terms of its damping and magnetic circuit performance, whilst adhering to stringent packaging constraints.
Journal ArticleDOI

Inerter-Based Configurations for Main-Landing-Gear Shimmy Suppression

TL;DR: In this article, a linear model of a Fokker 100 aircraft main landing gear equipped with a shimmy-suppression device is presented, and the performance advantages of inerter-based configurations for suppressing shimming of main landing gears, together with corresponding parameter values, are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI

Magnetorheological landing gear: 2. Validation using experimental data

TL;DR: In this paper, a methodology was developed that enables the geometry of a flow mode magnetorheological (MR) valve to be optimized within the constraints of an existing passive landing gear.

Coefficients of Friction

E. C. Pike
- 01 Dec 1949 -
TL;DR: In this paper, a summary of information collected on coefficients of friction (rolling and sliding) between rubber tyres and road or runway surfaces is presented, and the results show the variation of sliding friction coefficient with various parameters at speeds up to 40 m.p.h.
Journal ArticleDOI

Theories on the Mechanics of Tires and Their Applications to Shimmy Analysis

TL;DR: In this article, a comparison of the stretched string and the point contact theories of the mechanics of tires is made, and it is found that either of these fundamental, linear theories will predict the shimmy characteristics of wheeled systems if the parameters involved are properly chosen.
Journal ArticleDOI

Synthesis of tire equations for use in shimmy and other dynamic studies

TL;DR: In this article, a linear constant coefficient differential equation for wheel shimmy was derived from experimental and theoretical frequency response curves, along with the corresponding experimental frequency response curve, and compared with those derived from the widely used Moreland tire theory.
