Amostragem e saturação em pesquisa qualitativa: consensos e controvérsias

01 Apr 2017-Vol. 5, Iss: 7, pp 1-12
TL;DR: Palavras-chave as discussed by the authors discusses sampling and saturation in qualitative research and discusses the following questions: To what extent individual interlocutions obtained in the field can be understood as revelations of the group and allow inferences about it? What would be the preconditions for a sufficient and reliable sample? In a project, should the number of people to be interviewed and the time for field observation be established previously? How many interviews and how much observation time are needed for a good fieldwork? When should the search for more data be discontinued?
Sampling and saturation in qualitative research: consensuses and controversies Abstract: This essay on sampling in qualitative research and on the concept of saturation discusses the following questions: To what extent individual interlocutions obtained in the field can be understood as revelations of the group and allow inferences about it? What would be the preconditions for a sufficient and reliable sample? In a project, should the number of people to be interviewed and the time for field observation be established previously? How many interviews and how much observation time are needed for a good fieldwork? When should the search for more data be discontinued? The responses are based on the specific literature and on the personal experience of the author, showing that, in principle, quantification escapes the logic of qualitative studies. Keywords: Qualitative research; Qualitative studies; Sampling; Saturation.

TL;DR: Asymmetries in the structure, resources, supply, and quality of the network's health services are determinants of cross-border movements, and municipal health services managers play a leading role in border areas.
Abstract: This field research aimed to identify healthcare integration among four twin cities in Parana State, Brazil, the determinants of cross-border movements of foreigners, and the obstacles to such integration. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with key informants that were analyzed with thematic content analysis. The results showed that asymmetries in the structure, resources, supply, and quality of the network's health services are determinants of cross-border movements. The experiences with integration are limited basically to emergency measures in health surveillance. Working groups are formed with limited case-resolution capacity, depending on personal, non-institutionalized initiatives. Public underfinancing is a limiting factor for access to health services. Municipal health services managers play a leading role in border areas, and they should be acknowledged as international political actors.

TL;DR: There is a need for new studies that address this dimension to the family caregiver in the field of Oncology, since this care is incipient by the nurse.
Abstract: Objective: To understand the spiritual needs of the patients' family caregiver under Oncology palliative care. Method: A descriptive, qualitative study with 20 family caregivers of patients hospitalized in an Oncology palliative unit. The data were collected through a phenomenological interview, and analyzed by the method of Amadeo Giorgi supported in the Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception. Results: The categories were unveiled: "Spirituality as a foundation for life"; "Spiritual needs sublimated by the family caregiver"; and "Care expected by the nurse". Conclusion: Family caregivers appropriate spirituality as a coping strategy and meeting the purpose and meaning of the moment experienced. It is profitable for the nurse to contemplate the spiritual needs of the caregiver in order to provide a guided assistance in the humanization of care and comprehensive care. Therefore, there is a need for new studies that address this dimension to the family caregiver in the field of Oncology, since this care is incipient by the nurse.

TL;DR: It can be concluded that despite the decreasing historical evolution, the high incidence of fatal work-related accidents are alarming and requires more impactful and effective measures of public policies for the promotion and protection of health and safety, as well as improvement in the quality of information systems.
Abstract: The high number of workplace accidents deaths shows factors associated with human suffering and incalculable social costs, generating strong impact on public health. The aim of this study was to describe the temporal behavior of mortality rates by accidents at work in Bahia, between 1997 and 2009. It is a descriptive ecological study using temporal series design, based on records of deaths by workplace accidents on the Department of the Unified Health System – DATASUS. Conducted a descriptive analysis of mortality rates of workplace accidents based on gender during the period, setting up a comparison with national data. Descriptive statistics was used to present the temporal evolution of the rates through the Excel software, version 5.0. The results showed a historical significant reduction of deaths due to workplace accidents. A decreasing trend in Brazil and also the predominance of deaths from accidents at work among males was observed. It can be concluded that despite the decreasing historical evolution, the high incidence of fatal work-related accidents are alarming and requires more impactful and effective measures of public policies for the promotion and protection of health and safety, as well as improvement in the quality of information systems.

TL;DR: O estudo teve como objetivo relatar uma experiência do uso da técnica de saturação teórica no campo das ciências sociais aplicadas, descrevendo os passos e ressaltando os desafios enfrentados.
Abstract: The transparency and clarity of research reports, emphasizing the data collection stage, are considered important parameters for evaluating the scientific rigor in qualitative studies. For this reason, the more explicit the collection and analysis procedures, the more quality can be measured in the study. A theoretical saturation guide used in data analysis can contribute to this purpose. This study aimed to report an experience of using the technique of theoretical saturation in the field of applied social sciences, describing the steps and highlighting the challenges faced. We discussed and problematized the following topics: categories of analysis, research script, criteria for sample organization, saturation point, registration and final verification of the theoretical saturation. We expected, from the results achieved, to contribute to the deepening of the knowledge about the technique, especially among qualitative researchers in the Administration field. In addition, the study also contributes to the dissemination of an empirical guide for the systematization and processing of data in studies that opt for theorical saturation.

TL;DR: The Discovery of Grounded Theory as mentioned in this paper is a book about the discovery of grounded theories from data, both substantive and formal, which is a major task confronting sociologists and is understandable to both experts and laymen.
Abstract: Most writing on sociological method has been concerned with how accurate facts can be obtained and how theory can thereby be more rigorously tested. In The Discovery of Grounded Theory, Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss address the equally Important enterprise of how the discovery of theory from data--systematically obtained and analyzed in social research--can be furthered. The discovery of theory from data--grounded theory--is a major task confronting sociology, for such a theory fits empirical situations, and is understandable to sociologists and laymen alike. Most important, it provides relevant predictions, explanations, interpretations, and applications. In Part I of the book, "Generation Theory by Comparative Analysis," the authors present a strategy whereby sociologists can facilitate the discovery of grounded theory, both substantive and formal. This strategy involves the systematic choice and study of several comparison groups. In Part II, The Flexible Use of Data," the generation of theory from qualitative, especially documentary, and quantitative data Is considered. In Part III, "Implications of Grounded Theory," Glaser and Strauss examine the credibility of grounded theory. The Discovery of Grounded Theory is directed toward improving social scientists' capacity for generating theory that will be relevant to their research. While aimed primarily at sociologists, it will be useful to anyone Interested In studying social phenomena--political, educational, economic, industrial-- especially If their studies are based on qualitative data.

TL;DR: Creswell as mentioned in this paper explores the philosophical underpinnings, history and key elements of five qualitative inquiry traditions: biography, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography and case study.
Abstract: This book explores the philosophical underpinnings, history and key elements of five qualitative inquiry traditions: biography, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography and case study. John W Creswell relates research designs to each of the traditions of inquiry and compares each of the research strategies for theoretical frameworks, writing introduction to studies, collecting data, analyzing data, writing the narrative, and employing standards of quality and verifying results. Five journal articles in the appendix offer fascinating reading as well as examples of the five different qualitative designs.
