Abstract: This dissertation presents several deterministic techniques for efficiently solving shortest paths, visibility, and other related geometric problems in parallel Specifically, we give techniques for designing efficient deterministic parallel algorithms for solving the following problems: computing rectilinear shortest paths that avoid rectangular obstacles in the plane, computing the visible portions of a simple polygonal chain from a point, and detecting the weak visibility of a simple polygon These parallel techniques further enable us to solve many related geometric problems that include: computing the convex hull of a set of planar points sorted by the x-coordinates, computing the convex hull of a simple polygon, finding the kernel of a simple polygon, triangulating a set of planar points sorted by the x-coordinates, triangulating monotone polygons and star-shaped polygons, solving the all dominating neighbors problem, computing shortest paths inside a weakly visible polygon, triangulating a weakly visible polygon, checking the weak external visibility of a simple polygon, and solving the one-cruising-guard problem Most of the parallel algorithms we obtain for these problems are optimal in the complexities of the total running time and the total amount of operations performed Our results improve the previously known parallel algorithms for these problems in either the time complexity, or the processor complexity, or the parallel computational model required by the algorithms (in the sense of using a weaker parallel model) The parallel computational models used by our algorithms are the CREW PRAM or the EREW PRAM

Abstract: Parallel fixed-parameter tractability studies how parameterized problems can be solved in parallel. A surprisingly large number of parameterized problems admit a high level of parallelization, but this does not mean that we can also efficiently compute small problem kernels in parallel: known kernelization algorithms are typically highly sequential. In the present paper, we establish a number of upper and lower bounds concerning the sizes of kernels that can be computed in parallel. An intriguing finding is that there are complex trade-offs between kernel size and the depth of the circuits needed to compute them: For the vertex cover problem, an exponential kernel can be computed by AC$^0$-circuits, a quadratic kernel by TC$^0$-circuits, and a linear kernel by randomized NC-circuits with derandomization being possible only if it is also possible for the matching problem. Other natural problems for which similar (but quantitatively different) effects can be observed include tree decomposition problems parameterized by the vertex cover number, the undirected feedback vertex set problem, the matching problem, or the point line cover problem. We also present natural problems for which computing kernels is inherently sequential.

Abstract: In this paper we give improved bounds for the multisearch problem on a hypercube. This is a parallel search problem where the elements in the structure S to be searched are totally ordered, but where it is not possible to compare in constant time any two given queries q and q′. This problem is fundamental in computational geometry, for example it models planar point location in a slab. More precisely, we are given on a n-processor hypercube a sorted n-element sequence S, and a set Q of n queries, and we need to find for each query q e Q its location in the sorted S. Note that one cannot solve this problem by sorting S ∪ Q, because every comparison-based parallel sorting algorithm needs to compare a pair q,q′ e Q in constant time. We present an improved algorithm for the multisearch problem, one that takes O(log n(log log n)3) time on a n- processor hypercube. This essentially replaces a logarithmic factor in the time complexities of previous schemes by a (log log n)3 factor. The hypercube model for which we claim our bounds is the standard one, SIMD, with O(1) memory registers per processor, and with one-port communication. Each register can store O(log n) bits, so that a processor knows its ID.

Abstract: In this paper, we present efficient parallel algorithms for solving several fundamental problems on planar st-graphs. The problems we consider include all-pairs shortest paths in weighted planar st-graphs, single-source shortest paths in weighted planar layered digraphs (which can be reduced to single-source shortest paths in certain special planar st-graphs), and depth-first search in planar st-graphs. The parallel algorithms we obtain are considerable improvement over the previously best known solutions.

Abstract: Many parallel algorithms use at least linear auxiliary space in the size of the input to enable computations to be done independently without conflicts. Unfortunately, this extra space can be prohibitive for memory-limited machines, preventing large inputs from being processed. Therefore, it is desirable to design parallel in-place algorithms that use sublinear (or even polylogarithmic) auxiliary space. In this paper, we bridge the gap between theory and practice for parallel in-place (PIP) algorithms. We first define two computational models based on fork-join parallelism, which reflect modern parallel programming environments. We then introduce a variety of new parallel in-place algorithms that are simple and efficient, both in theory and in practice. Our algorithmic highlight is the Decomposable Property introduced in this paper, which enables existing non-in-place but highly-optimized parallel algorithms to be converted into parallel in-place algorithms. Using this property, we obtain algorithms for random permutation, list contraction, tree contraction, and merging that take linear work, $O(n^{1-\epsilon})$ auxiliary space, and $O(n^\epsilon\cdot\text{polylog}(n))$ span for $0<\epsilon<1$. We also present new parallel in-place algorithms for scan, filter, merge, connectivity, biconnectivity, and minimum spanning forest using other techniques. In addition to theoretical results, we present experimental results for implementations of many of our parallel in-place algorithms. We show that on a 72-core machine with two-way hyper-threading, the parallel in-place algorithms usually outperform existing parallel algorithms for the same problems that use linear auxiliary space, indicating that the theory developed in this paper indeed leads to practical benefits in terms of both space usage and running time.

Abstract: A model of computation based on random access machines operating in parallel and sharing a common memory is presented. The computational power of this model is related to that of traditional models. In particular, deterministic parallel RAM's can accept in polynomial time exactly the sets accepted by polynomial tape bounded Turing machines; nondeterministic RAM's can accept in polynomial time exactly the sets accepted by nondeterministic exponential time bounded Turing machines. Similar results hold for other classes. The effect of limiting the size of the common memory is also considered.

Abstract: It is shown that arithmetic expressions with n ≥ 1 variables and constants; operations of addition, multiplication, and division; and any depth of parenthesis nesting can be evaluated in time 4 log2n + 10(n - 1)/p using p ≥ 1 processors which can independently perform arithmetic operations in unit time. This bound is within a constant factor of the best possible. A sharper result is given for expressions without the division operation, and the question of numerical stability is discussed.
