Abstract: We provide the first non-trivial lower bound, p-3pnp, where p is the number of the processors and n is the data size, on the average-case communication volume, @s, required to solve the parenthesis matching problem, assuming problem instances are uniformly distributed, and present a parallel algorithm that takes linear (optimal) computation time and optimal expected message volume, @s+p The kernel of the algorithm is to solve the all nearest smaller values problem Provided np=@W(p), we present an algorithm that achieves optimal sequential computation time and uses only a constant number of communication phases, with the message volume in each phase bounded above by (np+p) in the worst case and p in the average case Experiments have been performed on two clusters: an SGI Intel Linux Cluster and a Sun cluster of workstations, both showing low communication overhead and good speedups

TL;DR: In this article, a parallel LZ77 coding algorithm for dictionary compression on the hypercube has been presented, which exploits the specific properties of the algorithm in order to achieve an efficient implementation.
Abstract: Dictionary compression belongs to the class of lossless com- pression methods and is mainly used for compressing text files [1, 2, 3]. In this paper, we present a parallel algorithm for one of these coding methods, namely the LZ77 coding algorithm also known as a sliding- window coding algorithm. Although there exist PRAM algorithms [4, 5] for various dictionary compression methods, their rather irregular struc- ture has discouraged their implementation on practical interconnection networks such as the mesh and hypercube. However in the case of LZ77 coding, we show how to exploit the specific properties of the algorithm in order to achieve an efficient implementation on the hypercube.

Abstract: Let G be a graph. A component of G is a maximal connected subgraph in G. A vertex v is a cut vertex of G if k(G-v) > k(G), where k(G) is the number of components in G. Similarly, an edge e is a bridge of G if k(G-e) > k(G). In this paper, we will propose new O(n) algorithms for finding cut vertices and bridges of a trapezoid graph, assuming the trapezoid diagram is given. Our algorithms can be easily parallelized on the EREW PRAM computational model so that cut vertices and bridges can be found in O(log n) time by using O(n / log n) processors.

Abstract: The computer industry has faced a constant need for more efficient hardware to perform computational tasks. Previous generations of microchips have tried to mitigate the problem on three fronts: increasing the execution speed by increasing the operating frequency, decreasing the amount of required time to issue a single instruction by enhancing instruction level parallelism, and increasing the “computational volume” by adding more computational units. Developing new architectures has turned out to be expensive and requires relatively great amount of resources even when building experimental FPGA prototypes. SMASim is a software based simulator, motivated by an experimental moving threads architecture, that attempts to lower the costs of rapidly designing new architectures. It is based on a general purpose, precise latency centric message passing framework between the described hardware architecture elements. Its relatively simple cost model captures the essential properties of many hardware designs. The simulator’s design allows easy monitoring of the system and provides execution performance comparable to other cycle-accurate hardware simulators. The implementation is cycle-accurate, modular, and supports simulation on various granularity levels. The simulator is implemented in hybrid object-functional language Scala. The flexibility of Scala allows using declarative domain specific notation when specifying parts of the architecture, yet it provides a static verification of the model via a strong type system. A graphical user interface is provided to simplify the task of modifying parameters of a simulated system and to provide interactive feedback.

Abstract: A model of computation based on random access machines operating in parallel and sharing a common memory is presented. The computational power of this model is related to that of traditional models. In particular, deterministic parallel RAM's can accept in polynomial time exactly the sets accepted by polynomial tape bounded Turing machines; nondeterministic RAM's can accept in polynomial time exactly the sets accepted by nondeterministic exponential time bounded Turing machines. Similar results hold for other classes. The effect of limiting the size of the common memory is also considered.

Abstract: It is shown that arithmetic expressions with n ≥ 1 variables and constants; operations of addition, multiplication, and division; and any depth of parenthesis nesting can be evaluated in time 4 log2n + 10(n - 1)/p using p ≥ 1 processors which can independently perform arithmetic operations in unit time. This bound is within a constant factor of the best possible. A sharper result is given for expressions without the division operation, and the question of numerical stability is discussed.
