Abstract: A pattern is a finite string of constant and variable symbols. The langauge generated by a pattern is the set of all strings of constant symbols which can be obtained from the pattern by substituting non-empty strings for variables. We study the learnability of one-variable pattern languages in the limit with respect to the update time needed for computing a new single hypothesis and the expected total learning time taken until convergence to a correct hypothesis. Our results are as follows. First, we design a consistent and set-driven learner that, using the concept of descriptive patterns, achieves update time O(n2logn), where n is the size of the input sample. The best previously known algorithm for computing descriptive one-variable patterns requires time O(n4logn) (cf. Angluin, J. Comput. Systems Sci. 21 (1) (1980) 46-62). Second, we give a parallel version of this algorithm that requires time O(logn) and O(n3/logn) processors on an EREW-PRAM. Third, using a modified version of the sequential algorithm as a subroutine, we devise a learning algorithm for one-variable patterns whose expected total learning time is O(l2logl) provided that sample strings are drawn from the target language according to a probability distribution with expected string length l. The probability distribution must be such that strings of equal length have equal probability, but can be arbitrary otherwise. Thus, we establish the first algorithm for learning one-variable pattern languages having an expected total learning time that provably differs from the update time by a constant factor only. Finally, we show how the algorithm for descriptive one-variable patterns can be used for learning one-variable patterns with a polynomial number of superset queries with respect to the one-variable patterns as query language.

Abstract: Memory contention can be a serious performance bottleneck in concurrent programs on shared-memory multicore architectures. Having all threads write to a small set of shared locations, for example, can lead to orders of magnitude loss in performance relative to all threads writing to distinct locations, or even relative to a single thread doing all the writes. Shared write access, however, can be very useful in parallel algorithms, concurrent data structures, and protocols for communicating among threads.We study the "priority update" operation as a useful primitive for limiting write contention in parallel and concurrent programs. A priority update takes as arguments a memory location, a new value, and a comparison function >p that enforces a partial order over values. The operation atomically compares the new value with the current value in the memory location, and writes the new value only if it has higher priority according to >p. On the implementation side, we show that if implemented appropriately, priority updates greatly reduce memory contention over standard writes or other atomic operations when locations have a high degree of sharing. This is shown both experimentally and theoretically. On the application side, we describe several uses of priority updates for implementing parallel algorithms and concurrent data structures, often in a way that is deterministic, guarantees progress, and avoids serial bottlenecks. We present experiments showing that a variety of such algorithms and data structures perform well under high degrees of sharing. Given the results, we believe that the priority update operation serves as a useful parallel primitive and good programming abstraction as (1) the user largely need not worry about the degree of sharing, (2) it can be used to avoid non-determinism since, in the common case when >p is a total order, priority updates commute, and (3) it has many applications to programs using shared data.

Abstract: The erratic memory access pattern of graph algorithms makes it hard to optimize on cache-based architectures. While multithreading hides memory latency, it is unclear how hardware threads combined with caches impact the performance of typical graph workload. As modern architectures strike different balances between caching and multithreading, it remains an open question whether the benefit of optimizing locality behavior outweighs the cost. We study parallel graph algorithms on two different multi-threaded, multi-core platforms, that is, IBM Power7 and Sun Niagara2. Our experiments first demonstrate their performance advantage over prior architectures. We find nonetheless the number of hardware threads in either platform is not sufficient to fully mask memory latency. Our cache-friendly scheduling of memory accesses improves performance by up to 2.6 times on Power7 and prior cache-based architectures, yet the same technique significantly degrades performance on Niagara2. Software prefetching and manipulating the storage of the input to improve spatial locality improve performance by up to 2.1 times and 1.3 times on both platforms. Our study reveals interesting interplay between architecture and algorithm.

Abstract: A model of computation based on random access machines operating in parallel and sharing a common memory is presented. The computational power of this model is related to that of traditional models. In particular, deterministic parallel RAM's can accept in polynomial time exactly the sets accepted by polynomial tape bounded Turing machines; nondeterministic RAM's can accept in polynomial time exactly the sets accepted by nondeterministic exponential time bounded Turing machines. Similar results hold for other classes. The effect of limiting the size of the common memory is also considered.

Abstract: It is shown that arithmetic expressions with n ≥ 1 variables and constants; operations of addition, multiplication, and division; and any depth of parenthesis nesting can be evaluated in time 4 log2n + 10(n - 1)/p using p ≥ 1 processors which can independently perform arithmetic operations in unit time. This bound is within a constant factor of the best possible. A sharper result is given for expressions without the division operation, and the question of numerical stability is discussed.
