TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a measure of parental stress, the Parental Stress Scale (PSS), which is a generic measure of stress called the perceived stress scale, relevant measures of emotions and role satisfaction (e.g. loneliness, marital satisfaction, guilt, etc.).
Abstract: The development of a measure of parental stress, the Parental Stress Scale, is presented. All participants (total N = 1276) completed the Parental Stress Scale and some also completed the Parenting Stress Index, a generic measure of stress called the Perceived Stress Scale, relevant measures of emotions and role satisfaction (e.g. loneliness, marital satisfaction, guilt, etc.), and one group completed the Parental Stress Scale twice. Analyses suggested that the Parental Stress Scale is highly reliable, both internally and over time, and related to the general measure of stress. Also, results were consistent across parents of differing parental characteristics, suggesting the stability of scale characteristics. The validity of Parental Stress Scale scores was supported by predicted correlations with measures of relevant emotions and role satisfaction and significant discrimination between mothers of children in treatment for emotional/behavioral problems and developmental disabilities vs mothers of childre...

TL;DR: The authors examined whether parenting stress in the home context is related to the children's behaviour while in preschool and found that parents' reports of expectations for their child's behaviour appear to weakly moderate the relationship between externalizing behaviour and parenting stress.
Abstract: Young children develop social and emotional competence through interactions with others in the two major contexts in which they spend time: home and preschool. This study examined whether parenting stress in the home context is related to the children's behaviour while in preschool. Previous research has suggested that parenting stress negatively influences parenting behaviour, which in turn has been shown to impact children's development. This study examined the direct relationship between parenting stress and children's behaviour in two types of preschool programmes: private day care centres and Head Start. Parenting stress was significantly related to teacher ratings of social competence, internalizing behaviours, and externalizing behaviours, and the effects of parenting behaviour do not appear to mediate this relationship. Parenting stress was most strongly related to children's social competence. Parents' reports of expectations for their child's behaviour appear to weakly moderate the relationship between externalizing behaviour and parenting stress. This study suggests that examination of a parent's level of stress, in addition to parenting practices, may be important in research and interventions with preschool children's behaviour and social competence. TL;DR: Improvements in parenting self-efficacy and parenting stress were found at follow-up, but there was less evidence for improvements in child behaviour, adding to the evidence that parent outcomes may be a more reliable measure of programme effectiveness than child outcomes at least in the short term.
Abstract: Aim: To explore whether changes in parenting self-efficacy after attending a parenting programme are related to changes in parenting stress and child behaviour. Background: Adverse parenting is a risk factor in the development of a range of health and behavioural problems in childhood and is predictive of poor adult outcomes. Strategies for supporting parents are recognised as an effective way to improve the health, well-being and development of children. Parenting is influenced by many factors including the behaviour and characteristics of the child, the health and psychological well-being of the parent and the contextual influences of stress and support. Parenting difficulties are a major source of stress for parents, and parenting self-efficacy has been shown to be an important buffer against parenting stress. Methods: In all, 63 parents who had a child under the age of 10 years took part in the research. Of those, 58 returned completed measures of parenting self-efficacy, parenting stress and child behaviour at the start of a parenting programme and 37 at three-month followup. Findings: Improvements in parenting self-efficacy and parenting stress were found at follow-up, but there was less evidence for improvements in child behaviour. The findings clearly suggest a relationship between parenting self-efficacy and parenting stress; parents who are feeling less efficacious experience higher levels of stress, whereas greater parenting self-efficacy is related to less stress. This study adds to the evidence that parent outcomes may be a more reliable measure of programme effectiveness than child outcomes at least in the short term.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed the pattern of care appropriate to establish a positive character in children and concluded that success in parenting is determined by the parent's personality or character, while the ideal pattern of permissiveness tends to make children be selfish person and insensitive because the parent tend to meet the needs of the material.
K at a Kunci : Keluarga, Pola asuh, Kepribadian. F A M I L Y R O LES IN PARENTING. Human development process consists of several phases. In the first phase- children phase- role of the family, especially the parents in parenting is significant because the family is the primary agent of socialization. Success in parenting is determined by upbringing pattern. Thus this paper attempts to review the pattern of care appropriate to establish a positive character in children.Indded, the pattern of care should be considered by parents seriously because determining the child’s personality or character. Theoretically, there are three types of parenting , which are authoritarian, permissive, and democratic. Authoritarian patterns are tend coercive and rigid, so that sometimes it makes children become depressed. While the pattern of permissiveness tends to make children be selfish person and insensitive because the parent tend to meet the needs of the material. The ideal type is democratic pattern because there is two-way communication pattern that puts children at the free position but remains controlled.
