TLDR
The results of the study suggest that the current business and regulatory environment is appropriate to achieve almost one-third shift to intermodal coastal shipping, although investments in infrastructure and substantial cost reductions in ship and port operations need to be implemented to ensure further modal shift.
Abstract
This paper analyses the modal shift from a primary road-based to coastal shipping-based freight distribution. A mathematical model is developed to optimize the coastal shipping route planni...

Design of a sustainable maritime multi-modal distribution network – Case study from automotive logistics

TL;DR: This paper addresses a multi-modal distribution network design problem with the aim of balancing the trade-off between economic and environmental benefits, and proposes a new mixed integer programming (MIP) model which decides the optimal design of the system.

Management and analysis of barriers in the maritime supply chains (MSCs) of containerized freight under fuzzy environment

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors employed fuzzy AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) to analyze the criticality of the barriers and their relative importance and found that infrastructural and legal barriers are the two most critical among all.

UK supply chain carbon mitigation strategies using alternative ports and multimodal freight transport operations

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used five scenarios in the context of UK import trade to assess total CO2e emissions and costs of import re-routing containers, and the overall objective is to assess possible carbon mitigation strategies for UK supply chains by using a combination of alternative ports and revised multimodal strategies.

Routing and scheduling of RoRo ships with stowage constraints

TL;DR: In this paper, a ship sails between two geographical regions, picking up cargo in the first and making deliveries to the second, and a tailor made heuristic procedure is built using components from tabu search and squeaky wheel optimization.
