TLDR
Measurements of gas exchange in unanesthetized White Leghorn hens showed that arterial PCO2 was lower and arterial PO2 was higher than the corresponding values in end-expired gas, which is explainable by the theory.

Structure of avian lungs.

TL;DR: Injection casts of the lung air sac system of 155 species of 47 families of birds were studied, together with preparations of fixed specimens of 45 species, finding the effective exchange surface per volume unit is ten times larger than that of comparable mammalian lungs.

Gas transport efficacy of gills, lungs and skin: Theory and experimental data

TL;DR: The analysis of gas exchange data obtained in an elasmobranch fish, domestic fowl, dog and a lungless salamander shows that, despite distinct differences in maximum efficiencies of these systems, the differences in efficiency values actually attained are much less pronounced.

Gas exchange in the domestic fowl during spontaneous breathing and artificial ventilation

TL;DR: When the unanesthetized hens were relaxed with succinylcholine and artificially ventilated, using the same tidal volume and frequency as observed during spontaneous respiration, the same values for O2 uptake and for CO2 and O2 partial pressures in arterial blood were measured, indicating unchanged gas exchange efficiency of the respiratory system.

Structure and Function of the Lung of Birds

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the assumption that the air currents in a bird lung are controlled by the alternate opening and closing of a large number of valves is wrong in almost every respect.

Efficiency of O2 exchange in the gills of the dogfish, scyliorhinus stellaris

TL;DR: In this article, a dogfish, Scyliorhinus stellaris, was anaesthetised with urethane and various respiratory parameters were measured in the dogfish.

Responses to alterations in respiratory Po2 and Pco2 in the chicken.

TL;DR: The chicken may have separate chemoreceptor systems that cause different respiratory responses to hypercarbia than to hypoxia, and the resistance to air flow of the respiratory system was decreased during Hypoxia.
