Abstract: Foliar and stem epidermal anatomical features of the tribe Cynoglosseae have been studied in detail for the taxonomic identification using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techniques. A comparative study was conducted on different plant parts (leaf and stem epidermal anatomy) of 25 species belonging to eight genera of the tribe Cynoglosseae (Boraginaceae) collected from different phytogeographical regions of Iran for the first time. Different qualitative and quantitative characteristics were observed in detail using LM and SEM. Results showed that although generally the stem and leaf anatomical traits were similar, but some diagnostic features were examined for distinguishing the closely related genera in the tribe. The ratio of cortex/diameter of stem and phloem/xylem, the average row number of collenchyma, palisade and spongy cells, structure of trichomes, type of indumentum and palisade arrangement were found taxonomically important. The anatomical characters were statistically analyzed using cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The study found that stem and leaf eccentrics are variable in the genus but constant within species of the same genus. Most species had typical isobilateral leaves, but some showed an incipient dorsoventrally symmetry with a layer of abaxial palisade tissue. Eglandular trichomes were observed found in all the studied species, which were recognized based on structure and function. In present study some novel characters have been observed which are of great interest to the taxonomist for the correct identification some genera delimitations. The characters studied here are of less taxonomic value and delimitating at species level.

Abstract: Crystal macropatterns in Fagaceae and Nothofagaceae were examined from cleared herbarium leaves (eight genera, 122 spp.) by polarizing microscopy. Prisms and druses dominate, but previously undescribed intermediate forms occur in 25 species of Fagaceae. Sixty-two species had only prisms associated with vein orders 1–4, but smallest orders 5 and 6 had few or no crystals. In mesophyll, 98 species had small druses in spongy parenchyma and larger but fewer druses in palisade parenchyma. Subfamily Fagoideae conformed closely to this macropattern, Castaneoideae less so. Six Castaneoideae species lacked vein crystals. Two Fagoideae species and seven Nothofagus species lacked mesophyll crystals. Druses with prominent cores occur throughout Fagaceae but none were seen in Nothofagaceae. Tabular presentation of results shows significant although overlapping trends from Fagoideae to Castaneoideae to Nothofagaceae, with the latter taxon deviating most from Fagaceae.

Abstract: Trichomes morphology, structure, and taxonomic significance of 82 species belonging to 9 tribes of Brassicaceae from Egypt were studied using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This work was largely based on herbarium material in addition, fresh material of most of the taxa was studied. A total of twelve trichome types could be distinguished and classified into unicellular or multicellular based on the structure of the hair. The unicellular trichomes could be distinguished as simple, hooked, vasculate, clavate simple glandular, appressed medifixed, trifixed, Y-shaped, branched (3–4 fids), dendroid and stellate. The multicellualr trichomes were glandular. We found trichomes as being valuable characteristics for identification of tribes, genera, species, subspecies, and varieties in Brassicaceae. A key for the identification of the investigated taxa based on trichome characters is provided in this paper.
