Abstract: A surgical instrument can comprise a channel configured to support a staple cartridge and, in addition, an anvil pivotable between open and closed positions relative to the channel. The surgical instrument can further comprise a cutting member configured to incise tissue positioned captured between the staple cartridge and the anvil and, in addition, means for stopping the cutting member prior to a distal end datum, wherein the distal end datum can be defined by the distal-most staple cavity in the staple cartridge. In such embodiments, the incision within the tissue may not extend beyond the portion of the tissue that has been stapled.

TL;DR: In this article, an E-beam firing bar is used to drive staples on each side of the cut in a surgical severing and stapling instrument, which is suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil.
Abstract: A surgical severing and stapling instrument, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamped end effector to sever tissue and to drive staples on each side of the cut. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the anvil from the elongate channel to assure properly formed closed staples, especially when an amount of tissue is clamped that is inadequate to space the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel slot is captured between a lower cap and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum spacing. Forming the E-beam from a thickened distal portion and a thinned proximal strip enhances manufacturability and facilitates use in such articulating surgical instruments.

Abstract: A surgical cutting and fastening instrument is disclosed. According to various embodiments, the instrument includes an end effector comprising an elongate channel, a clamping member pivotably connected to the channel, and a moveable cutting instrument for traversing the channel to cut an object clamped in the end effector by the clamping member when the clamping member is in a clamped position. The instrument may also comprise a main drive shaft assembly for actuating the cutting instrument in the end effector, a gear drive train connected to the main drive shaft assembly, and a motor for actuating the gear drive train. The instrument may also includes a closure trigger and a firing trigger, separate from the closure trigger, for actuating the motor when the firing trigger is retracted. Also, the instrument may comprise a mechanical closure system connected to the closure trigger and to the clamping member for causing the clamping member to pivot to the clamped position when the closure trigger is retracted.

Abstract: A temperature control apparatus for a bed includes at least one heating element, mounted in a resting surface on a mattress of the bed for warming at least a first are(a of the resting area. A temperature sensor is located to detect the temperature of the first area of the resting area, and transmits the information to a central control unit. The central control unit includes a central processing unit which is interconnected with both the heating element and the temperature sensor to adjust the temperature in the first, area of the resting area as desired. The central control unit is also connected to a timer to permit programming of temperature changes as desired. An occupant sensor in the resting surface of the mattress will detect the presence and absence of an occupant, and transmit this information to the central control unit for processing.

Abstract: A wake-up alarm is set to ring in some time interval. One or more physical characteristics of the sleeping subject, including brain wave activity, pulse rate, REM activity, muscle tension, body temperature, hearing acuity, positional changes and the like are monitored to determine whether the subject is in a deep or shallow-sleep phase. If the subject is in the deep-sleep phase throughout the alarm time interval, the alarm is inhibited until the end of the alarm interval. The inhibiting of the alarm ends as soon as the subject goes into a shallow-sleep phase.

TL;DR: In this paper, a silent alarm clock including a portable receiver unit with a wristwatch-type configuration is presented, where the receiver unit includes a vibrator adapted to create a vibrating sensation upon the receipt of a radio signal.
Abstract: A silent alarm clock including a portable receiver unit with a wrist watch-type configuration. The receiver unit includes a vibrator adapted to create a vibrating sensation upon the receipt of a radio signal. To provide power to the receiver unit a rechargeable battery is included with a pair of associated contacts and a charger adapted to allow the recharging thereof. Also included is a base transmitter unit with a recharging base having a pair of contacts for contacting those of the receiver unit in a recharge orientation. A clock unit is situated within the base transmitter unit having associated control circuitry and a speaker. The clock circuitry is adapted to define at least two predetermined times. The base transmitter unit is adapted to transmit an audio signal via the speaker at a predetermined time if the receiver unit is the recharge orientation thereof and further generate a radio signal via free space if the receiver unit is not in the recharge orientation. Thus, a first user is awakened via the vibrator at the first predetermined time and places the receiver unit within the recharging base thereafter. A second user is then awakened at the second predetermined time via the audio alarm.
