Apparatus and method for restricting the discharge of fasteners from a tool

15 Nov 2001-
TL;DR: In this paper, a method for discharging fastening elements and a method of preventing a device from discharging a fastening device into human flesh was described. But the method was not discussed.
Abstract: A device for discharging fastening elements, and a method of preventing a device from discharging fastening devices into human flesh, are disclosed. The device includes a coil proximate a location of discharge, a capacitive element coupled in parallel with the conductive coil to form a resonant tank circuit, an oscillator that drives the tank circuit, a frequency detector, an amplitude control circuit and a processor. The detector detects a frequency of oscillation of the tank circuit as affected by a material proximate the coil. In response to an electrical signal from the oscillator, the control circuit generates a control signal that is provided back to the oscillator. Based upon the frequency and an additional signal functionally related to the control signal, the processor provides an output signal that prevents the device from discharging when the material proximate the coil is human flesh.

TL;DR: In this paper, a surgical instrument can comprise a channel configured to support a staple cartridge and, in addition, an anvil pivotable between open and closed positions relative to the channel.
Abstract: A surgical instrument can comprise a channel configured to support a staple cartridge and, in addition, an anvil pivotable between open and closed positions relative to the channel. The surgical instrument can further comprise a cutting member configured to incise tissue positioned captured between the staple cartridge and the anvil and, in addition, means for stopping the cutting member prior to a distal end datum, wherein the distal end datum can be defined by the distal-most staple cavity in the staple cartridge. In such embodiments, the incision within the tissue may not extend beyond the portion of the tissue that has been stapled.

TL;DR: In this article, an E-beam firing bar is used to drive staples on each side of the cut in a surgical severing and stapling instrument, which is suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil.
Abstract: A surgical severing and stapling instrument, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamped end effector to sever tissue and to drive staples on each side of the cut. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the anvil from the elongate channel to assure properly formed closed staples, especially when an amount of tissue is clamped that is inadequate to space the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel slot is captured between a lower cap and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum spacing. Forming the E-beam from a thickened distal portion and a thinned proximal strip enhances manufacturability and facilitates use in such articulating surgical instruments.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for monitoring respiration volumes by continuously measuring, while the patient breathes, variations in the patient's chest cross sectional area, or preferably variations in both chest and abdomen areas.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are shown for monitoring respiration volumes by continuously measuring, while the patient breathes, variations in the patient's chest cross sectional area, or preferably, variations in both chest and abdomen areas. Each area is measured by measuring the inductance of an extensible electrical conductor closely looped around the body, by connecting the loop as the inductance in a variable frequency LC oscillator followed by a frequency-to-voltage converter and a voltage display. Calibration is made by measuring the area variations for a few breaths while directly measuring corresponding volumes of breath, preferably while the patient assumes at least two body positions, for example sitting and supine. The method and apparatus may also be used to monitor changes in area of any non-magnetic object.

TL;DR: In this paper, a belt-mounted vital signs monitor is used to monitor respiratory activity and cardiac activity in order to prevent sudden infant death syndrome, or crib death, and in intensive care units or cardiac units of hospitals.
Abstract: Provision is made to monitor for vital signs, such as respiratory activity and cardiac activity. The monitoring equipment is mounted by a belt to a person being monitored. Multiple Inductance coils carried by the belt move relative to each other in response to breathing, and the associated mutual inductance changes provide sensory signals to reflect the breathing. Electrical signals indicative of such vital signs are transmitted by radio wave to a central monitor which can monitor the activity of numerous persons. A plurality of such patient units including vital signs sensors and transmitters in combination with a single central monitor may be used to monitor multiple patients. The present invention is useful in monitoring to attempt to prevent sudden infant death syndrome, or crib death, and in intensive care units or cardiac units of hospitals and the like.

TL;DR: In this article, an apparatus for determining the resistivity of formations surrounding an earth borehole is presented, where an electrode is mounted on the body and has a surface that is electrically isolated from the surface of the body.
Abstract: An apparatus for determining the resistivity of formations surrounding an earth borehole. An elongated electrically conductive body is movable through the borehole. A first transmitter establishes a first current in the body from a first transmitter position on the body, the first current traveling in a path that includes the body and the formations. An electrode is mounted on the body and has a surface that is electrically isolated from the surface of the body. A first electrical signal, resulting from the first current, is measured at the electrode. A second transmitter establishes a second current in the body from a second transmitter position on the body that is spaced from the first transmitter position, the second current traveling in a path that includes the body and the formations. A second electrical signal, resulting from the second current, is measured at the electrode. A current monitor measures the axial current passing a monitor position on the body to obtain a monitor current value. An indication of formation resistivity is derived as a function of the first electrical signal, the second electrical signal, and the monitor current value.

TL;DR: In this article, a suture-needle holding tip is driven to oscillate relative to the handle in the same motion as the surface of the heart, which is being operated on.
Abstract: An apparatus for open-heart surgery includes a suture-needle holding tip (10) or a stapler and a handle (100). The tip is driven to oscillate relative to the handle in the same motion as the surface of the heart, which is being operated on. This cancels the motion of the heart, effectively stopping it, so that the surgeon (S) need not compensate for heart beats. The tip can grasp or release the needle (N) with a mechanism (300) under control of a switch (330) through a flexible cable 120. Independently, a drive mechanism 200 causes a cam (230) to be turned by a motor 213 for driving the needle-holding tip by means of a flexible cable 120. The cam is shaped so that the pattern of the platform oscillation follows the beating heart's motion. A momentary-contact switch triggers a pacer, which paces the heart to beat in synchrony with the motion of the needle-holding tip. The rate is set slightly above the un-paced heart beat rate.
