Archaeological, Alethurgical, and Dispositif Analysis: Discourse Studies on Higher Education in Poland from a Post-Foucauldian Perspective

Abstract: At the present stage of the reception of Foucault’s ideas, various theoretical and methodological trends coexist, within which the concepts of Michel Foucault are used fruitfully in empirical research One of them is discourse studies understood as an inter- and transdisciplinary research area This article distinguishes and describes three post-Foucauldian strategies of discourse analysis, the combined use of which in one research project is a proposal to integrate concepts scattered in Foucault’s various works The strategies distinguished (archaeological, alethurgical, and dispositif) are characterized by the different analytical categories, understanding of discourse, and its relations with knowledge and power The article presents selected results of the complementary use of concepts such as knowledge formation, alethurgy, confession, or the dispositif in the empirical research on the reform of higher education in Poland

Abstract: When people come to counselling they do so because they identify some issue or problem in their life with which they want help. In the process they reveal, to a greater or lesser extent, various aspects of themselves in a form of confession of the self. Thus, the counselling relationship, although a private one, has performative aspects, whereby the person reveals something of their truth about themselves to the counsellor. How the person and the counsellor then deal with this discursive construction of self will differ according to the modality that the counsellor adopts. This paper is divided into sections that cover, first, an introduction with a brief outline of Foucault's genealogical analysis, and second, a genealogy of confessing our selves with subsections on Classical Greek technologies of the self, Christian religious confessional practices, and medico-therapeutic confessional practices: the secularisation of confession. Abstract: The UK National Student Survey (NSS) has high status on the agenda of UK universities. Its rise in status is linked to its influence on national rankings and associated funding streams referenced to the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF). Consequently, many universities have implemented further assessments of student satisfaction, thereby putting additional internal performative pressures on courses and individual lecturers. The research contribution of this paper consists in an analysis of the NSS through Foucault’s notion of “governmentality” with a particular focus on his work on “discipline” and “neo-liberal governmentality”. More specifically, by utilising qualitative data from interviews, research diaries and observations, it will be demonstrated how the NSS functions as a “disciplinary” technology of government which subjects lecturers, departments and universities to intersecting panoptic gazes and perpetual ratings. In addition, the NSS can also be considered ‘neo-liberal’ (Foucault, 2008, p. 193) in that it governs the academic population through narrow conceptions of “freedom” and omnipresent competition. The paper proposes that it is through the amalgamated forces of intersecting panoptic gazes, on the one hand, and neo-liberal free-market principles, on the other, that student feedback develops its power to govern.
