TLDR
There is little evidence that osteoporosis can usefully be tackled by a public health policy to influence risk factors such as smoking, exercise and nutrition, so the selective use of screening techniques will improve the cost-benefit ratio of intervention.

Burden of major musculoskeletal conditions

TL;DR: The burden of four major musculoskeletal conditions: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and low back pain, which affects nearly everyone at some point in time and about 4-33% of the population at any given point is described.

European guidance for the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women

TL;DR: In this paper, the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and Bone disease (subsequently the International osteopo- rosis Foundation) published guidelines for the diagnosis and management of osteoporrosis in a European setting.

FRAX™ and the assessment of fracture probability in men and women from the UK

TL;DR: The models provide a framework which enhances the assessment of fracture risk in both men and women by the integration of clinical risk factors alone and/or in combination with BMD.

The worldwide problem of osteoporosis: insights afforded by epidemiology.

B.L. Riggs, +1 more

TL;DR: The incidence of hip fracture, and, presumably, other osteoporotic fractures will increase four-fold worldwide during the next 50 years and the attendant costs will threaten the viability of the healthcare systems of many countries.

Vitamin D3 and calcium to prevent hip fractures in elderly women

TL;DR: The effects of supplementation with vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and calcium on the frequency of hip fractures and other nonvertebral fractures, identified radiologically, in 3270 healthy ambulatory women are studied.

Hip fractures in the elderly: a worldwide projection

TL;DR: The results suggest that osteoporosis will truly become a global problem over the next half century, and that preventive strategies will be required in parts of the world where they are not currently felt to be necessary.

Relationships between surface, volume, and thickness of iliac trabecular bone in aging and in osteoporosis. Implications for the microanatomic and cellular mechanisms of bone loss.

TL;DR: The data indicate that age-related bone loss occurs principally by a process that removes entire structural elements of bone; those that remain are more widely separated and some may undergo compensatory thickening, but most slowly become reduced in thickness.
