Associating a handoff address to a communication session

05 Jul 2006-
TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for associating a handoff address to a communication session includes determining one or more communication sessions are established in a first network and associating each of the handoff addresses with each of these sessions.
Abstract: A system and method for associating a handoff address to a communication session includes determining one or more communication sessions are established in a first network. Each of one or more handoff addresses is associated with each of the one or more communication sessions. Associating each of the one or more handoff addresses is according to a temporal order of establishment of the one or more communication sessions.

TL;DR: A phone docking station allows the mobile device to be linked to the base telephone system as discussed by the authors, and one or more features and functions of a mobile device may be enabled on or supported by the base phone system.
Abstract: Systems, methods and computer program products for processing a call as between a mobile device and a linked base telephone system are described. A phone docking station allows the mobile device to be linked to the base telephone system. Features of either the mobile device or the base telephone system may be used to support a call. For example, through the phone docking station, one or more features and functions of the mobile device may be enabled on or supported by the base telephone system.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for allowing legacy circuit switched user equipment (CS UE) to operate via a packet-switch system, such as an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) system, is provided.
Abstract: A system and method for allowing legacy circuit switched user equipment (CS UE) to operate via a packet-switch system, such as an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) system, is provided. The mobility and session control aspects of communications with a legacy CS UE is separated. A user agent is placed in the receiving node (e.g., a home node B) that acts as the SIP agent for the CS UE for session control. An interworking function is provided to allow mobility between the macro CS network and the PS (e.g., IMS) network.

TL;DR: In this article, an unlicensed wireless service (UWS) is adapted to generate the interface protocols of a licensed wireless service to provide transparent transition of communication sessions between a LWS and an UWS.
Abstract: An unlicensed wireless service (126) is adapted to generate the interface protocols of a licensed wireless service (106) to provide transparent transition of communication sessions between a licensed wireless service and an unlicensed wireless service. In one embodiment, a mobile station (102) includes level 1, level 2, and level 3 protocols for licensed wireless service and an unlicensed wireless service. An indoor base station (128) and indoor network controller provide protocol conversion for the unlicensed wireless service into a standard base station (108) controller interface of the licensed wireless service.

TL;DR: In this paper, an access gateway and a dual-mode mobile station are used to enable source-initiated handoff from a cellular wireless network to a non-cellular wireless network.
Abstract: To address the need for an apparatus and method for handoff from a cellular wireless network to a non-cellular wireless network (WLAN, e.g.), the present application describes an access gateway (214) and a dual mode mobile station (201) that enable such handoffs. Dual mode MSs can determine when a handoff to a non-cellular network is preferred and request a handin (302) from the non-cellular network. The access gateway provides information to the MS (304) so that it can initiate a handoff through the serving cellular network. Triggering handoffs in this manner, allows cellular networks to handle handoffs to non-cellular networks in much the same way they handle inter-MSC handoffs today, i.e., source initiated.

TL;DR: In this article, a wireless communication handset consisting of licensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry and unlicensed wireless communication signals processing circuitry is described. But the authors do not specify the type of signal processing.
Abstract: The invention discloses a wireless communication handset comprising licensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry and unlicensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry. The invention further discloses a control circuit connected to both the licensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry and the unlicensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry, and a computer readable memory for directing the control circuit to function in a specified manner. This memory includes instructions to formulate a measurement report containing signal strength information that corresponds to the strength of a signal received through the unlicensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry. The measurement report also contains a request to transfer a wireless communication session from a licensed wireless system to an unlicensed wireless system. The memory further includes instructions to transmit the measurement report to the licensed wireless system through the licensed wireless communication signal processing circuitry.

TL;DR: In this article, a handoff from a first Internet Protocol (IP) connection to a second IP connection is described. But the handoff is not considered in this paper, and the handover is not addressed.
Abstract: A method (900) of and apparatus for effecting a handoff from a first Internet Protocol (IP) connection (221) to a second IP connection (331) is disclosed. The method includes: communicating a packet data communication between a first station and a gateway using the first IP connection and a first IP address for the first station, the gateway relaying the packet data communication with a second station; setting up the second IP connection with a second IP address for the first station, the first IP connection being a primary connection and the second IP connection being a secondary connection between the first station and the gateway, determining that the second IP connection should be the primary connection between the first station and the gateway; and changing the second IP connection to the primary connection by informing the gateway that the second IP address is the primary address using stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) messages.
