Abstract
An image character recognition project is described whose purpose is to investigate the applicability of artificial neural system (ANS) technology to the automated reading of account number fields from copies of credit card charge receipts. The advantage of the ANS approach for such pattern recognition tasks is that it is both nonlinear and adaptive. After training with a large number of other noisy patterns, the neural network recognition system can correctly identify all of the numbers in the figure without having seen these particular images before. Although the emphasis of this proof-of-concept study is on reducing credit industry costs by improving the accuracy of recognition, this approach promises to ultimately offer a significant boost in processing speed as well. The account number processing problem, the system developed for its solution, and the analysis of its performance are described. >

An image acquisition method for raised characters based on laser vision technology

TL;DR: A fast gray-scale image acquisition method for no-color raised characters and a laser stripe extracting method based on second-order gradient image that can get uniform and well-separated images of raised characters under various conditions are presented.

Discrete polynomial moments and the extraction of 3-D embossed digits for recognition

TL;DR: The theory of polynomial moments is extended by proving their spectral behavior with respect to Gaussian noise, which opens the door to doing computations on the signal-to-noise ratios ofPolynomial filters and with this, the comparability to classical filters is made possible.

Apparatus for verifying a container code

TL;DR: In this article, an apparatus and method for verifying a code displayed on a container surface against a target code is presented. But the method is not suitable for the detection of potential characters of the displayed code.

A novel image sensor for raised characters based on structured‐light

TL;DR: A novel image sensor technology for raised characters based on line structured‐light that can convert raised character's three‐dimensional features into image's grayscale levels and does not need complicated calibration and mass computation, which makes the system structure simple and increases the speed of image acquisition.
