TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined secondary mathematics teachers' and science teachers' implementation of a language of instruction policy in Malaysia, which made English the medium for mathematics and science instruction, and found that teachers' beliefs about their respective roles as only content teachers or only language teachers limit students' language learning opportunities.
Abstract: This article presents data from a study examining secondary mathematics teachers’ and science teachers’ implementation of a language of instruction policy in Malaysia, which made English the medium for mathematics and science instruction. It explores the beliefs of math, science and language teachers, and how these beliefs influence their pedagogical practices in content-based language instruction classrooms. The study uses a mixed-methods approach for data collection and data analysis. Data is analysed using perspectives from content-based language teaching (CBLT) and from research on mathematics and science instruction for English language learners (ELLs). The results indicate that teachers’ beliefs about their respective roles as only content teachers or only language teachers limit students’ language learning opportunities. Factors such as curricular requirements, exam pressure and time constraints also shape classroom interactions, and have implications for student learning as well. The findings reve...

TL;DR: The findings suggest that shared decision-making may be advocated as a philosophical tenet or a value, but it is not necessarily implemented in actual communication with patients, and a variety of persuasive approaches are used to ensure agreement with the physician's recommendation.

TL;DR: This article explored the ways in which school culture and leadership impact on new teachers' learning in the workplace and suggested the key role of school culture in re-shaping teachers' response to the institutional and situational constraints of the workplace.
Abstract: Drawing upon empirical data, this article explores the ways in which school culture and leadership impact on new teachers' learning in the workplace. The study was carried out over a two‐year period and involved a cohort of 14 new teachers and 18 elementary and secondary schools. Data were collected through semi‐structured interviews with the new teachers and headteachers and a questionnaire which was also administered to all staff in each of the schools. Findings suggest the key role of school culture and leadership in (re)shaping teachers' response to the institutional and situational constraints of the workplace and their learning and socialization process at school. Implications for induction and the role of schools in fostering teacher professional growth are discussed.

TL;DR: Clinical teaching in academic medical centres is facing major challenges, and finding creative, effective strategies to support patient care and teaching are critical for survival.
Abstract: Background Academic medical centres face major challenges, and finding creative, effective strategies to support patient care and teaching are critical for survival. At the centre of these challenges is clinical teaching. Aim To characterise how context influences clinical teaching. Methods Multiple embedded case-study design analysed 3 internal medicine in-patient teams. Direct observations, interviews and documents were data sources. Triangulated data, audit trails and member checks enhanced trustworthiness. Results Three tensions influenced clinical teaching: 1, patient census; 2, time sensitivity of the context; and 3, the multiple and conflicting commitments of participants. Patient census exhibited the greatest influence and was the catalyst for teaching, learning, and the allocation of total time. Time functioned as an important element influencing the pace of action, reflective and interpretative cognitive processes of the team, time available for action, and the general fatigue of the team. Conflicts among the multiple roles of ward team members disrupted individual and team teaching and learning. Conclusion Clinical teaching is an open system influenced by multiple forces. Learning, teaching and patient care were very closely coupled, and learning knowledge and using knowledge were parts of the same process within the clinical context.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present results of a qualitative study of values development in U.S. and Scottish social work students who participated in a study-abroad program, and six themes emerged: opening the mind to new ways of thinking; awareness and insight into one's own values and beliefs; social awareness and challenges to societal values and belief; appreciation of difference, cultural sensitivity, and anti-discriminatory practice; social justice; and professional identity development.
Abstract: This article presents results of a qualitative study of values development in U.S. and Scottish social work students who participated in a study-abroad program. Six themes emerged: opening the mind to new ways of thinking; awareness and insight into one's own values and beliefs; social awareness and challenges to societal values and beliefs; appreciation of difference, cultural sensitivity, and anti-discriminatory practice; social justice; and professional identity development. Implications for social work study-abroad programs and future research are discussed.

TL;DR: The use of reliability and validity are common in quantitative research and now it is reconsidered in the qualitative research paradigm as discussed by the authors, which can also illuminate some ways to test or maximize the validity and reliability of a qualitative study.
Abstract: The use of reliability and validity are common in quantitative research and now it is reconsidered in the qualitative research paradigm. Since reliability and validity are rooted in positivist perspective then they should be redefined for their use in a naturalistic approach. Like reliability and validity as used in quantitative research are providing springboard to examine what these two terms mean in the qualitative research paradigm, triangulation as used in quantitative research to test the reliability and validity can also illuminate some ways to test or maximize the validity and reliability of a qualitative study. Therefore, reliability, validity and triangulation, if they are relevant research concepts, particularly from a qualitative point of view, have to be redefined in order to reflect the multiple ways of establishing truth. Key words: Reliability, Validity, Triangulation, Construct, Qualitative, and Quantitative This article discusses the use of reliability and validity in the qualitative research paradigm. First, the meanings of quantitative and qualitative research are discussed. Secondly, reliability and validity as used in quantitative research are discussed as a way of providing a springboard to examining what these two terms mean and how they can be tested in the qualitative research paradigm. This paper concludes by drawing upon the use of triangulation in the two paradigms (quantitative and qualitative) to show how the changes have influenced our understanding of reliability, validity and triangulation in qualitative studies.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a variety of techniques for theme discovery in qualitative research, ranging from quick word counts to laborious, in-depth, line-by-line scrutiny.
Abstract: Theme identification is one of the most fundamental tasks in qualitative research. It also is one of the most mysterious. Explicit descriptions of theme discovery are rarely found in articles and reports, and when they are, they are often relegated to appendices or footnotes. Techniques are shared among small groups of social scientists, but sharing is impeded by disciplinary or epistemological boundaries. The techniques described here are drawn from across epistemological and disciplinary boundaries. They include both observational and manipulative techniques and range from quick word counts to laborious, in-depth, line-by-line scrutiny. Techniques are compared on six dimensions: (1) appropriateness for data types, (2) required labor, (3) required expertise, (4) stage of analysis, (5) number and types of themes to be generated, and (6) issues of reliability and validity.

TL;DR: In fact, most of the archaeologically recoverable information about human thought and human behavior is text, the good stuff of social science as mentioned in this paper, which is what we use in this paper.
Abstract: This chapter is about methods for managing and analyzing qualitative data. By qualitative data the authors mean text: newspapers, movies, sitcoms, e-mail traffic, folktales, life histories. They also mean narratives--narratives about getting divorced, about being sick, about surviving hand-to-hand combat, about selling sex, about trying to quit smoking. In fact, most of the archaeologically recoverable information about human thought and human behavior is text, the good stuff of social science.
