TL;DR: A design trial allowing users to interact with a public screen via their mobile phones facilitated a feedback platform about a concrete urban planning project by promoting specific questions and encouraging direct, in-situ, real-time responses via SMS and twitter.
Abstract: Local governments struggle to engage time poor and seemingly apathetic citizens, as well as the city's young digital natives, the digital locals. This project aims at providing a lightweight, technological contribution towards removing the hierarchy between those who build the city and those who use it. We aim to narrow this gap by enhancing people's experience of physical spaces with digital, civic technologies that are directly accessible within that space. This paper presents the findings of a design trial allowing users to interact with a public screen via their mobile phones. The screen facilitated a feedback platform about a concrete urban planning project by promoting specific questions and encouraging direct, in-situ, real-time responses via SMS and twitter. This new mechanism offers additional benefits for civic participation as it gives voice to residents who otherwise would not be heard. It also promotes a positive attitude towards local governments and gathers information different from more traditional public engagement tools.

TL;DR: This study comprehensively explored parental bereavement and adjustment at 6 months post-loss due to childhood cancer with 3 domains: Perception of the Child, describing bereavement before and after the loss; Perception of Others, including relationships with partners, surviving children, and their social network; and perception of the World, exploring parents' perceived meanings of the experience in the context of their worldview.
Abstract: This study comprehensively explored parental bereavement and adjustment at 6 months post-loss due to childhood cancer. Interviews were conducted with 18 mothers and 13 fathers. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed based on qualitative methodology. A model describing early parental bereavement and adaptation emerged with 3 domains: (1) Perception of the Child, describing bereavement and adjustment prior to and after the loss; (2) Perception of Others, including relationships with partners, surviving children, and their social network; and (3) Perception of the World, exploring parents' perceived meanings of the experience in the context of their worldview. Domains are illustrated by quotes. Profiles of parental bereavement emerged.

TL;DR: The authors examined how elementary level and middle school level social studies textbooks represent the history of racial violence directed toward African Americans and resistance to this violence in the U.S. Using a literary analysis method, they found that these narratives often presented these acts as detached from the larger structural and institutional ties that supported and subsequently benefited from these actions.
Abstract: Drawing from the theoretical lenses of cultural memory and critical race theory, we examined how elementary level and middle school level social studies textbooks represent the history of racial violence directed toward African Americans and resistance to this violence in the U.S. Using a literary analysis method, we found that textbooks often presented vivid accounts; however, these narratives often presented these acts as detached from the larger structural and institutional ties that supported and subsequently benefited from these actions. We contend that this limited representation of racial violence has an adverse effect on the larger sociocultural memory and sociocultural knowledge available to students, thus limiting the extent to which students can fully understand the legacy of racism and racial inequity in the U.S.

TL;DR: The authors examined parents' and attorneys' understanding of BIC legal criteria in order to examine the similarities and differences between parental and professional concepts, and found that legal professionals and parents ranked similar criteria as most important, but differing language and perspectives used to communicate these criteria hinder reconciliation of seemingly divergent concepts across parties.
Abstract: The term “best interest of the child”(BIC) is used within the legal system to focus attention on the needs and welfare of individual children. However, little is known about parents' perspective of the best interest for their child during divorce. This paper examines parents' and attorneys' understanding of BIC legal criteria in order to examine the similarities and differences between parental and professional concepts. Forty-one parents and 28 attorneys participated for a sample size of 69 semi-structured interviews. Parent responses corresponded with the legal criteria in about one-half of the cases. Although legal professionals and parents ranked similar criteria as most important, differing language and perspectives used to communicate these criteria hinder reconciliation of seemingly divergent concepts of BIC across parties. The clarification of these differences in parental and legal perspectives is necessary to maintain the welfare of the child as the primary concern in divorce cases.

TL;DR: In this paper, the qualitative and quantitative differences between maternal and paternal play interaction behaviours with their preschool children were analyzed to derive interaction themes, which indicated that mothers tend to structure, guide, teach, and engage in empathic conversations, whereas fathers tend to engage in physical play.
Abstract: The study focused on qualitative and quantitative differences between maternal and paternal play interaction behaviours with their preschool children. Home observations of 18 child–mother and child–father play interactions were qualitatively analysed to derive interaction themes. In addition, the quality of child–mother and child–father interactions was assessed through emotional availability (EA) coding system. The qualitative analyses indicated that during play interactions with their preschool children, mothers tend to structure, guide, teach, and engage in empathic conversations, whereas fathers tend to engage in physical play, behave like age-mates, follow the child's lead, and challenge children. Despite these qualitative differences, child–mother dyads did not differ significantly from child–father dyads on five out of six EA dimensions. The discussion includes methodological implications of the findings derived through this mixed-methods study.

TL;DR: The use of reliability and validity are common in quantitative research and now it is reconsidered in the qualitative research paradigm as discussed by the authors, which can also illuminate some ways to test or maximize the validity and reliability of a qualitative study.
Abstract: The use of reliability and validity are common in quantitative research and now it is reconsidered in the qualitative research paradigm. Since reliability and validity are rooted in positivist perspective then they should be redefined for their use in a naturalistic approach. Like reliability and validity as used in quantitative research are providing springboard to examine what these two terms mean in the qualitative research paradigm, triangulation as used in quantitative research to test the reliability and validity can also illuminate some ways to test or maximize the validity and reliability of a qualitative study. Therefore, reliability, validity and triangulation, if they are relevant research concepts, particularly from a qualitative point of view, have to be redefined in order to reflect the multiple ways of establishing truth. Key words: Reliability, Validity, Triangulation, Construct, Qualitative, and Quantitative This article discusses the use of reliability and validity in the qualitative research paradigm. First, the meanings of quantitative and qualitative research are discussed. Secondly, reliability and validity as used in quantitative research are discussed as a way of providing a springboard to examining what these two terms mean and how they can be tested in the qualitative research paradigm. This paper concludes by drawing upon the use of triangulation in the two paradigms (quantitative and qualitative) to show how the changes have influenced our understanding of reliability, validity and triangulation in qualitative studies.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a variety of techniques for theme discovery in qualitative research, ranging from quick word counts to laborious, in-depth, line-by-line scrutiny.
Abstract: Theme identification is one of the most fundamental tasks in qualitative research. It also is one of the most mysterious. Explicit descriptions of theme discovery are rarely found in articles and reports, and when they are, they are often relegated to appendices or footnotes. Techniques are shared among small groups of social scientists, but sharing is impeded by disciplinary or epistemological boundaries. The techniques described here are drawn from across epistemological and disciplinary boundaries. They include both observational and manipulative techniques and range from quick word counts to laborious, in-depth, line-by-line scrutiny. Techniques are compared on six dimensions: (1) appropriateness for data types, (2) required labor, (3) required expertise, (4) stage of analysis, (5) number and types of themes to be generated, and (6) issues of reliability and validity.

TL;DR: In fact, most of the archaeologically recoverable information about human thought and human behavior is text, the good stuff of social science as mentioned in this paper, which is what we use in this paper.
Abstract: This chapter is about methods for managing and analyzing qualitative data. By qualitative data the authors mean text: newspapers, movies, sitcoms, e-mail traffic, folktales, life histories. They also mean narratives--narratives about getting divorced, about being sick, about surviving hand-to-hand combat, about selling sex, about trying to quit smoking. In fact, most of the archaeologically recoverable information about human thought and human behavior is text, the good stuff of social science.
