TL;DR: A bibliographical review of the finite element methods applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view is given.
Abstract: Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the structural and dynamic aspects of pretwisted rods is presented, which is divided into three main subjects: static analysis, dynamic analysis and stability problems.
Abstract: Because of being important structural elements in many engineering applications on one hand, and presenting inherent complicated coupling effects on the other hand, pretwisted rods have attracted the interest of many researchers. During the years, as a result of engineering breakthroughs, like the introduction of composite materials or operating at very high temperatures, the problems associated with pretwisted rods became more complicated. The present review will present the research during the last fifty years. It will be divided into three main subjects: static analysis, dynamic analysis and stability problems. The review will concentrate on the structural and dynamic aspects of pretwisted rods. Derivations of models and solution techniques will be addressed.

TL;DR: In this article, the buckling loads, natural frequencies and mode shapes of twist-drill bits and certain fluted cutters under a variety of combinations of twist angle, cross-section geometry, and axial loading have been obtained.
Abstract: The buckling loads, natural frequencies and mode shapes of twist-drill bits and certain fluted cutters under a variety of combinations of twist angle, cross-section geometry, and axial loading have been obtained. The drill bit is modelled as a twisted Euler beam under axial loading that is clamped at both ends. The governing system of differential equations is solved by the Galerkin procedure. Explicit forms for the basis functions used to generate the Galerkin coefficients are presented in general form in an appendix. They may be used for obtaining numerical results for that class of problems which use the Rayleigh-Ritz-Galerkin methods with beamtype functions as the basis functions. The representative set of modes obtained exhibit a complex out-of-plane twisting-type motion that suggests a possible explanation for the out-of-roundness of certain drilled holes.

TL;DR: In this article, a finite element formulation for the stability analysis of pretwisted columns is developed, and good convergence is observed and satisfactory accuracy is obtained by using few elements, and the required computational effort is found to be minimal.
Abstract: The effect of pretwist on the buckling load of column is presanted. A finite element formulation is developed for the stability analysis of pretwisted columns. Numerical examples are used on pretwisted columns and other related types of columns to demonstrate the finite element model. In all cases, good convergence is observed and satisfactory accuracy is obtained by using few elements, and the required computational effort is found to be minimal. Experimental results are presented for the buckling loads and the associated buckling modes by varying the angles of pretwist. Good agreement between the predicted values and the experimental results is observed. Finite element solutions, of critical loads of pretwisted columns are presented in tabular form and also graphically for various angles of pretwist and different ratios of principal moment of inertia.
