Channel cooperation : a reflective scale

06 Nov 2009-The International Journal of Logistics Management (Emerald Group Publishing Limited)-Vol. 20, Iss: 3, pp 301-321
TL;DR: A valid and reliable scale for measuring inter‐firm cooperation in supply chains for use in logistics management research is found, based on 181 observations from supply‐chain relationships.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to draw on theories on inter‐organisational governance with a view to developing a reliable reflective scale for measuring inter‐firm cooperation in supply chains for use in logistics management research.Design/methodology/approach – Following a literature review, the paper develops items for three relational norms. The model is tested with structural equation modelling (SEM).Findings – The literature review reveals that most of the currently used variables and scales describe the characteristics of focal firms, rather than relationship properties. The few exceptions that focus on relationships fail to recognise the dimensionality of channel cooperation. The proposed scale is found to be valid and reliable, based on 181 observations from supply‐chain relationships.Research limitations/implications – The valid and reliable scale that captures relationship characteristics and recognises the dimensionality of channel cooperation should be tested in future research.Origi...

TL;DR: In this paper, a conceptual model for using agency theory to explain and address a type of supply chain vulnerability called quality fade is proposed, which is defined as the unforeseen deterioration of agreed to or expected quality levels with respect to product and/or service requirements.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose using agency theory for assessing the likelihood of quality fade in buyer‐supplier relationships and prescribing contractual mechanisms for reducing quality fade. In this paper, quality fade, an element of supply chain vulnerability, is defined as the unforeseen deterioration of agreed to or expected quality levels with respect to product and/or service requirements. The use of outcome‐based, behavior‐based, or mix contracts can be used to reduce the likelihood of quality fade and illustrate preferred scenarios for buyer and suppliers.Design/methodology/approach – This paper proposes a conceptual model for using agency theory to explain and address a type of supply chain vulnerability called quality fade. A 2×2 matrix is proposed that contrasts outcome measurability with outcome uncertainty to illustrate buyer and supplier vulnerability and to suggest contractual mechanisms that can be used to mitigate vulnerability for both parties.Findings – A typology o...

TL;DR: A conceptual model with theoretical basis on Relational Exchange Theory (RET) and extant supply chain theory is developed as a causal model that can be operationalised using structural equations modelling and a “single key informant” approach.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is threefold: first, review the literature on the topic of behavioural antecedents of collaboration and their impact on supply chain integration and performance; second, lay the theoretical foundations and develop a conceptual model linking behavioural antecedents of collaboration, information integration, coordination of operational decisions and supply chain performance; and third, set out operationalisation considerations. Design/methodology/approach – A conceptual model with theoretical basis on Relational Exchange Theory (RET) and extant supply chain theory is developed as a causal model that can be operationalised using structural equations modelling (partial least squares) and a “single key informant” approach. Findings – Positive relationships between behavioural antecedents of collaboration (trust, commitment, mutuality/reciprocity), information integration, coordination of operational decisions and supply chain performance (efficiency, effectiveness) are hypot...

TL;DR: A novel multi-phase approach to aid partners to address the following questions in the location problem context: ‘Where and with whom should the company locate its business?’
Abstract: The site location is an important strategic decision for a company and usually incorporates several conflicting criteria. Therefore, multicriteria decisions methods are more and more used in this context. On the same time, another increasing trend is cooperative relationships where partners or even rivals work together to collectively enhance their performances by sharing resources. This paper presents a novel multi-phase approach to aid partners to address the following questions in the location problem context: ‘Where and with whom should the company locate its business?’ A case study is described where final year students are looking for a flat to share in London.

TL;DR: In this paper, a survey method was used to gather data from 103 participants who are involved in their respective organization's contingency planning and implementation processes, and the data were analyzed using partial least squares to examine relationships between contingency planning effectiveness, inter-organizational information technology (IT) use, cooperative attitude, and interorganizational collaboration.
Abstract: Purpose – Today's supply chains face increasing vulnerabilities; effective management of disruptions is critical to an organization's ability to weather disruptive events and remain competitive. Contingency planning is a method of risk management that promotes effective crisis management. This research tests proposed antecedents of contingency planning effectiveness in a supply chain setting.Design/methodology/approach – A survey method was used to gather data from 103 participants who are involved in their respective organization's contingency planning and implementation processes. The data were analyzed using partial least squares to examine relationships between contingency planning effectiveness, inter‐organizational information technology (IT) use, cooperative attitude, and inter‐organizational collaboration.Findings – The proposed model explains 87 percent of the variance in contingency planning effectiveness. The findings suggest that inter‐organizational collaboration, inter‐organizational IT use,...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors draw on insights from theories on individuals and organisations to study recently formed supply chain relationships (SCRs) and develop an alternative view to the dominant strand of research on relational capital in SCRs.
Abstract: Purpose – Cooperation in logistics and supply chain management has most often been studied as a characteristic of a focal firm, rather than as a relationship property, and inter‐organisational aspects need to be better understood. The purpose of this paper is to draw on insights from theories on individuals and organisations to study recently formed supply chain relationships (SCRs).Design/methodology/approach – Following a literature review, the study develops an alternative view to the dominant strand of research on relational capital in SCRs. Drawing on insights from other disciplines, not usually associated with supply chain management, refutable propositions are suggested. Appropriate measurement scales for the new variables are suggested.Findings – The notion of relational capital in SCRs is extended to include financial capital and psychological commitment. New propositions that relate relational capital and length of the honeymoon period (the time period immediately after SCR formation, during whi...

Abstract: This article examines the adequacy of the “rules of thumb” conventional cutoff criteria and several new alternatives for various fit indexes used to evaluate model fit in practice. Using a 2‐index presentation strategy, which includes using the maximum likelihood (ML)‐based standardized root mean squared residual (SRMR) and supplementing it with either Tucker‐Lewis Index (TLI), Bollen's (1989) Fit Index (BL89), Relative Noncentrality Index (RNI), Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Gamma Hat, McDonald's Centrality Index (Mc), or root mean squared error of approximation (RMSEA), various combinations of cutoff values from selected ranges of cutoff criteria for the ML‐based SRMR and a given supplemental fit index were used to calculate rejection rates for various types of true‐population and misspecified models; that is, models with misspecified factor covariance(s) and models with misspecified factor loading(s). The results suggest that, for the ML method, a cutoff value close to .95 for TLI, BL89, CFI, RNI, and G...

Abstract: Criteria for evaluating structural equation models with latent variables are defined, critiqued, and illustrated. An overall program for model evaluation is proposed based upon an interpretation of converging and diverging evidence. Model assessment is considered to be a complex process mixing statistical criteria with philosophical, historical, and theoretical elements. Inevitably the process entails some attempt at a reconcilation between so-called objective and subjective norms.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that an increasingly important unit of analysis for understanding competitive advantage is the relationship between firms and identify four potential sources of interorganizational competitive advantage: relation-specific assets, knowledge-sharing routines, complementary resources/capabilities, and effective governance.
Abstract: In this article we offer a view that suggests that a firm's critical resources may span firm boundaries and may be embedded in interfirm resources and routines. We argue that an increasingly important unit of analysis for understanding competitive advantage is the relationship between firms and identify four potential sources of interorganizational competitive advantage: (1) relation-specific assets, (2) knowledge-sharing routines, (3) complementary resources/capabilities, and (4) effective governance. We examine each of these potential sources of rent in detail, identifying key subprocesses, and also discuss the isolating mechanisms that serve to preserve relational rents. Finally, we discuss how the relational view may offer normative prescriptions for firm-level strategies that contradict the prescriptions offered by those with a resource-based view or industry structure view.
