Cloud computing: a collaborative green platform for the knowledge society

Abstract: Purpose – The main aim of this paper is to investigate the potential of Cloud Computing as a multilayer integrative collaboration space for knowledge acquisition, nurturing and sharing. The paper will pinpoint benefits and challenges of Cloud Computing in satisfying the new techno-sociological requirements of the knowledge society through the provision of information technology (IT) green services. Furthermore, the article calls for the engagement of researchers to generate additional discussion and dialog in this emerging and challenging area. Design/methodology/approach – The paper applies a conceptual analysis to explore the utilization of the Cloud ecosystem as a new platform for knowledge management (KM) technologies characterized by environmental and economic benefits. Abstract: Within changing value networks, the profits and competitive advantages of participation reside dynamically at control points that are the positions of greatest value and/or power. The enterprises that hold these positions have a great deal of control over how the network operates, how the benefits are redistributed, and how this influences the execution of a digital business strategy. This article is based on a field study that provides preliminary, yet promising, empirical evidence that sheds light on the dynamic cycle of value creation and value capture points in digitally enabled networks in response to triggers related to technology and business strategy. The context used is that of the European and U.S. broadcasting industry. Specifically, the paper illustrates how incremental innovations may shift value networks from static, vertically integrated networks to more loosely coupled networks, and how cross-boundary industry disruptions may then, in turn, shift those to two-sided markets. Based on the analysis, insights and implications for digital business strategy research and practice are then provided.

Abstract: With the increasing popularity of cloud computing services, it is becoming more and more important for cloud service providers to ensure that they fulfill their responsibility towards the society by minimizing the environmental impact of their business operations The high electricity needs of datacenters make cloud computing companies consume an extremely large amount of electricity To deal with this issue, these companies are starting to adopt renewable sources of energy to power their datacenters for reducing the negative environmental impact The purpose of this paper is to review the green Cloud and economic benefits of green Cloud Therefore, it has been found that dynamic provisioning, multi-tenancy, server utilization and datacenter efficiency are major factors that could be used to minimize the power consumption while increasing environmental sustainability The paper concludes that (a) economical viability of green Cloud adoption, (b) the location datacenter that needs to be considered during green Cloud adoption, (c) the utility providers that provide green energy at competitive prices, and (d) the generation of energy at on-site will be costly, but mixes of energy sources such as wind and coal will cost companies 13% more

Abstract: We review the command and control (C2) literature to develop a comprehensive understanding of C2 systems and identify network evaluation methods. C2 is the recursive process of sharing the intent of decision-makers across organizations, turning intent into action, monitoring success, and adjusting goals to meet changing needs. Although substantial C2 research exists, the literature remains isolated by application context, and advances are rarely integrated. Our review identifies research in military, emergency response, civilian infrastructure, and management literature that inform the analysis of C2 systems. We organize C2 research with theory from Network Centric Warfare and complex systems to integrate knowledge across broad disciplines and applications. The review organizes studies across four interrelated domains (i.e., physical, information, social, and cognitive), presents system design and evaluation constraints across sub-systems, and offers practical considerations for advancing C2 theory. The review also catalogues network evaluation methods used to study C2 agility, i.e., the ability to successfully effect, cope with, and/or exploit changes in circumstances. Together, this paper supports the organizing, integration, and advancement of knowledge for the influential, yet broad research subject of C2.

Abstract: As information technology has grown in power and ubiquity, companies have come to view it as ever more critical to their success; their heavy spending on hardware and software clearly reflects that assumption. Chief executives routinely talk about information technology's strategic value, about how they can use IT to gain a competitive edge. But scarcity, not ubiquity, makes a business resource truly strategic--and allows companies to use it for a sustained competitive advantage. You only gain an edge over rivals by doing something that they can't. IT is the latest in a series of broadly adopted technologies--think of the railroad or the electric generator--that have reshaped industry over the past two centuries. For a brief time, as they were being built into the infrastructure of commerce, these technologies created powerful opportunities for forward-looking companies. But as their availability increased and their costs decreased, they became commodity inputs. From a strategic standpoint, they became invisible; they no longer mattered. that's exactly what's happening to IT, and the implications are profound. In this article, HBR's editor-at-large Nicholas Carr suggests that IT management should, frankly, become boring. It should focus on reducing risks, not increasing opportunities. For example, companies need to pay more attention to ensuring network and data security. Even more important, they need to manage IT costs more aggressively. IT may not help you gain a strategic advantage, but it could easily put you at a cost disadvantage.
