TL;DR: Open access to scientific knowledge is an integral part of India's S&T policy intervention as discussed by the authors, and some of the major international and Indian national initiatives are highlighted in this article.
Abstract: Various initiatives are taken globally to make knowledge repositories more accessible to researchers by exploiting the internet platform and developing a model that allows free access. India is also actively participating in this new initiative. Open access to scientific knowledge is an integral part of India’s S&T policy intervention. Some of the major international and Indian national initiatives are highlighted. Further efforts that would be required to make Indian participation more fruitful are also brought out.

TL;DR: International collaboration and networking in developing user-interfaces for selected Indian languages for an open source software the GSDL (Greenstone Digital Library) software for creating digital libraries of multilingual multimedia information resources, more particularly for the South Asia region is described.
Abstract: Inter-country cooperation in any sector almost invariably begins with information exchange among the nations or groups involved. Briefly Describes international collaboration and networking in developing user-interfaces for selected Indian languages for an open source software the GSDL (Greenstone Digital Library) software for creating digital libraries of multilingual multimedia information resources, more particularly for the South Asia region. The steps in the formation of the related GSDL South Asia Network, the tasks assigned to the institutions in the SAARC countries, and the plan of work are mentioned. The role and contributions of the participating institutions and the organizations at the international level and in different countries is also briefly described. Further developmental work needed and problems to be solved as identified from the work done on user-interfaces in Indian languages are highlighted. A. TL;DR: Most library professionals will be able to focus on becoming information experts and establish their relevance at the very epicenter of business and education in this digital segment of the Information Age.
Abstract: This is the Information Age, and that epicenter is information flow and content control. This is the one occupation that is best suited to benefit from this still evolving epoch of human history. In fact, any organization that fundamentally relies on information dissemination as a core resource to their production would seek out information experts as the de facto experts in this field for consultation on how best to handle their large volumes of information. Today, companies are searching for these very professionals and will pay extraordinarily well to have such expertise in their organizations. As long as they change their mindset, evolve from conservative ideologies of what a library professional is, and retain and improve upon the traditional library services while seeking to develop techniques and technologies that effectively handle the workflow of the information dissemination process in a Digital Age—adapting technologies such as the KATIE Index, the MEL System, and the LISA Informationbase for the physical and virtual collection management requirements—most library professionals will be able to focus on becoming information experts and establish their relevance at the very epicenter of business and education. Evolving into the information expert and leveraging new information technologies is where the future of library studies lays in this digital segment of the Information Age. This chapter concludes the first section of the book.

TL;DR: Major areas of collaboration between India and USA are in the field of medicines, followed by physics and astronomy, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology during 2007–2016.
Abstract: The research collaboration trend between India and USA during 2007–2016 was evaluated on the basis of research publications indexed in Scopus database. Research collaboration of 55607 documents has been analyzed to see the international collaboration pattern between India and USA during the period. The trend of research publications in collaboration was assessed by analyzing; year-wise collaboration pattern, year-wise collaboration with other countries, growth trend in collaboration with USA, types of documents used for publishing research results, top institutes/universities which are associated with research collaboration, top source titles based on the number of publications, subject categories in research collaboration, etc. International collaboration patterns institutions and countries have been studied in the paper. The results of the study showed that major areas of collaboration between India and USA are in the field of medicines, followed by physics and astronomy, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology during 2007–2016.

TL;DR: Using the library and computer use of a class of freshmen at Baruch College correlated to the students' use of the library's electronic resources, and students who express an interest in learning about the library’s electronic resources will be more likely to have higher self-efficacy.
Abstract: To encourage students' use of the library, and in particular of its electronic resources, we need to understand what factors encourage students to seek out information in the library setting. Research has shown that self-efficacy influences academic achievement. This paper looks at the role self-efficacy plays in their search for information and use of the library's electronic resources, by surveying a class of freshmen at Baruch College. Their library and computer use were analyzed and correlated with their self-efficacy scores. Through statistical analysis, we found that use of the library correlated to the students' use of the library's electronic resources. We also found out that students who express an interest in learning about the library's electronic resources will be more likely to have higher self-efficacy.

TL;DR: Opening the Internet to common usage literally opened the flood gates of what has come to be known as the information superhighway, and there is virtually no subject that cannot be found on the Internet in one form or another.
Abstract: As a source of serious subject-oriented information, the Internet has been a powerful feature in the information arena since its inception in the last quarter of the twenti eth century. It was, however, initially restricted to gov ernment contractors or major research universities operating under the aegis of the Advanced Research Projects Network (ARPANET) .( 1) In the 1990s, the content and use of the Internet was expanded to includemundane subjects covered in business, industry, education , government, entertainment, and a host of otherareas. It has become a magnanimous network of networks the measurement of whose size, impact , and content often elude serious scholarly effort.(2) Opening the Internet to common usage literally opened the flood gates of what has come to be known as the information superhighway. Currently, there is virtually no subject that cannot be found on the Internet in one form or another.
