Comments on mix calculation method of self compacting high performance concrete

01 Jan 2004-
TL;DR: In this paper, a modified overall calculation method for self-compacting concrete (SCC) is presented based on discussions of mix design parameters such as water binder ratio, paste aggregate ratio, and volume content of fine and coarse aggregation.
Abstract: Comparing with mix calculation of ordinary concrete, mix calculation of self-compacting concrete (SCC) deals with more factors. Not only the demand of strength should be met,but also the requirements for workability should be met well,so SCC is different from ordinary concrete.Up to now, there is no uniform mix method of SCC.In this paper, mix calculation method in common use is introduced concisely. Based on discussions of mix design parameters such as water binder ratio, paste aggregate ratio, and volume content of fine and coarse aggregation, and referred to the fixed volume content of aggregate method, the modified overall calculation method is presented. It can well satisfy the demands of the trait of SCC,and the application of the method is simple and convenient. The method proposed in this paper is beneficial to the popularization of SCC.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that aggregate segregation rapidly grows up with the increase of aggregate size and in order to reduce aggregate segregation, paste viscosity should be increased correspondingly under identical fluidity.
Abstract: There are many factors affecting segregation of self-compacting concrete, and one of major factors is aggregate size. Based on the application of Stokes law to analyze aggregate segregation, ball-drop paste viscosity measurement has been used in the research that segregation degree of aggregate of various particle size in paste of identical paste consistency and the relationship between aggregate size and paste viscosity when concrete mixture reach the same fluidity in this article. It shows that aggregate segregation rapidly grows up with the increase of aggregate size and in order to reduce aggregate segregation, paste viscosity should be increased correspondingly under identical fluidity; as the aggregate size comes up to a certain degree, the growth of paste viscosity speeds up obviously, for the sake of maintaining the fluidity, paste should be increased; there is a sudden change in the growth course curve that paste viscosity increases with the aggregate, from the perspective of aggregate segregation, the part before the change has been approved to be a reasonable size range of the aggregate.
