Abstract
Physical inactivity is a prevailing issue of our society causing billions in healthcare, productivity losses, and million deaths. To counteract this problem, fitness tracking technology is increasingly considered as a means to enhance motivate individuals’ physical activity motivation and behavior. Extant research, however, provides an overall inconclusive picture about the ‘motivational effectiveness’ of fitness tracking technology, reporting, positive, mixed, and even adverse impacts on physical activity motivation and behavior. To better understand these motivational impacts, this paper theorizes the role of the motivational affordances, the underlying motivation-psychological process, and the role of interpersonal, motivational differences of the users. Based on an empirical study involving 286 fitness tracking technology users, results reveal how individual motivational affordances distinctively satisfy users’ needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, and thereby enhance the physical activity motivation and behavior of the individuals. Moreover, results support interpersonal variations stemming from motivational affordances as that users pursuing certain physical activity goal obtain higher need satisfaction from the enacted affordances. In essence, this paper contributes with a deeper understanding about the motivation-psychological processes and variations underlying fitness tracking technology use which guides practice in the development of effective interventions.

“Run forrest run!”: Measuring the impact of App-enabled performance and social feedback on running performance

Abstract: Exercise tracking apps are a novel, scalable, and affordable tool for delivering personalized behavioral interventions. While thousands of fitness tracking solutions emerge in the market, there is a lack of systematic research that quantify their effectiveness on exercise outcomes, making it hard for for practitioners and users to know the true value of these apps. Drawing on the literature on motivation literature, this paper elucidates the effects of app-enabled motivation on running performance. Specifically, this study examines the two most common forms of feedback available to users of exercise tracking apps, namely performance feedback and social feedback. We conducted a 18-month long randomized field experiment, with 1,241 military servicemen, to assess the causal effect of these feedback types on actual exercise outcomes. Results from the experiment provided evidence that these two app features improve the running times of the servicemen. We further discuss the temporality and hetoerogeneity of these effects.

Mature Adults' Use of Digital Health Services - The Role of Prior Computer Experience on eHealth Adoption

TL;DR: The findings underline the strong impact previous work with IT has on eHealth use regardless of how long the respondent is already retired and find that outcome expectations are a strong mediator on the relationship between self-efficacy and the use of digital health services.

The moderator–mediator variable distinction in social psychological research: Conceptual, strategic, and statistical considerations.

TL;DR: This article seeks to make theorists and researchers aware of the importance of not using the terms moderator and mediator interchangeably by carefully elaborating the many ways in which moderators and mediators differ, and delineates the conceptual and strategic implications of making use of such distinctions with regard to a wide range of phenomena.

The measurement of observer agreement for categorical data

TL;DR: A general statistical methodology for the analysis of multivariate categorical data arising from observer reliability studies is presented and tests for interobserver bias are presented in terms of first-order marginal homogeneity and measures of interob server agreement are developed as generalized kappa-type statistics.

Common method biases in behavioral research: a critical review of the literature and recommended remedies.

TL;DR: The extent to which method biases influence behavioral research results is examined, potential sources of method biases are identified, the cognitive processes through which method bias influence responses to measures are discussed, the many different procedural and statistical techniques that can be used to control method biases is evaluated, and recommendations for how to select appropriate procedural and Statistical remedies are provided.
