TL;DR: In this article, the potential of continuing education to develop technical, relational/communicational, and ethical/political competences in nurses has been investigated, and the results show that continuing education significantly contributes to the development of professional competences and indicate a predominance of the technical dimension as a way of ensuring security and professional recognition.
Abstract: This study aimed at characterizing the potential of continuing education to develop technical, relational/communicational, and ethical/political competences in nurses. This is a qualitative study undertaken with 12 nurses. Data collection was performed through documental analysis, interviews, and observation. Data were analysed on the basis of pre-determined categories: technical, communicational/relational, and ethical/political competences. Our results show that continuing education significantly contributes to the development of professional competences and indicate a predominance of the technical dimension as a way of ensuring security and professional recognition. However, relational/communicational and ethical/political competences are consolidating. They contribute to the interpersonal relationships and to the way of organizing work. Continuing educational processes, which include multiple dimensions of competences, potentiate the process, favoring integration among professionals in a changing world.

TL;DR: In this paper, an integrative review of the literature on permanent education in health services in Brazil is presented, highlighting conceptual problematization as a contribution to educational actions, indicating a conceptual development of permanent education.
Abstract: Objective: To analyze the literature on permanent education, identifying the conceptual evolution and its application in health services in Brazil. Method: An integrative review of the literature was performed. A total of 54 studies written in English, Portuguese and Spanish, published from January 1970 to May 2016 from the databases of the Virtual Health Library, were included. Results: Conceptual problematization was highlighted as a contribution to educational actions, indicating a conceptual development of permanent education in Brazil. However, permanent education actions sometimes occur independently from the work process. There are difficulties in understanding and application, with repercussions for health services, revealing that professionals' and managers' commitment is a challenge. Implications for practice: Continuing education is a field that lacks investments for the transformation of reality in the health service routine in Brazil.

TL;DR: Care should be the focus of all health care work, bearing in mind that intervention for technological action of each profession goes beyond the core of isolated knowledge, as is the case of nursing, which is connected to other professional practices and can peruse other territories that operate through relational technologies.
Abstract: Objective this article discusses comprehensive care as a guiding tenet of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), outlining health care practices, especially nursing, and the relationships built by subjects in action by means of different knowledge. Methods this is a theoretical reflection that aims to propose dimensions of analysis (access to services, reception, links, lines of care, accountability, and responsiveness), with an emphasis on the dilemmas and challenges of nursing. The proposed dimensions analyze the production of care and its political and technical aspects. Conclusion care should be the focus of all health care work, bearing in mind that intervention for technological action of each profession goes beyond the core of isolated knowledge, as is the case of nursing, which is connected to other professional practices, and can peruse other territories that operate through relational technologies, entering into the world of the needs of users and families.

TL;DR: Multiple holistic-qualitative case studies based on Maffesoli's Interpretive Sociology show that the notions of PE are linked to the daily needs of individuals and services, with indication of being interactive, periodic, in specific and non-global issues for better assimilation.
Abstract: Objective: To understand, from the perspective of the professional, the Permanent Education (PE) in the vaccination room in its real context. Method: Multiple holistic-qualitative case studies, based on Maffesoli’s Interpretive Sociology with 56 participants from four microregions of the Western Extended Region of Minas Gerais State. Results: They present PE as infrequent and insufficient. They denote that the practical-theoretical experience with vaccine contributes to the work; the search for knowledge, starting from the professional itself; and the professional training fails to perform in the vaccination room. Final considerations: The notions of PE are linked to the daily needs of individuals and services, with indication of being interactive, periodic, in specific and non-global issues for better assimilation. Obstacles to the non-implementation of PEH are realized by the workload associated with insufficient human resources, the distance of the nurses from the vaccination room and the lack of support from the higher levels.
