Abstract: What are the key issues confronting the call for a new critical inquiry? How to create a new family of terms for a new critical inquiry, terms slip and slide, fall over one another: critical embodied, transformative, dialogic, reflexive, participatory, emancipatory, narratives of resistance, plateaus, planes of composition, Deleuze, Guattari, assemblages, affect, nomadic inquiry, rhizomatic, love, loss, praxis writing as a way of being in the world. Writing framed around acts of activism and resistance. How do we move forward?

TL;DR: Within human resource development (HRD), there is an increasing call for in-depth qualitative research to enhance the evidence-base associated with the field as mentioned in this paper, however, like the HRD community across the world, the qualitative research community is a disparate one.
Abstract: Within human resource development (HRD) there is an increasing call for in-depth qualitative research to enhance the evidence-base associated with the field. However, like the HRD community across the world, the qualitative research community is a disparate one. Different scholars draw on a range of research strategies that include (and are not limited to): case study, ethnography, phenomenology, grounded theory, biographical, narrative, historical and participatory inquiry (Denzin, 2017). Qualitative research is a vibrant and emerging field; different epistemological and disciplinary positions are represented and, given the emergent and diverse nature of the field, it is not surprising that no consensus has been achieved about ‘rigor’. Indeed, even the term ‘rigor’ is contested (Barusch, Gringeri, & George, 2011).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the newness of new materialism and explore how it plays out in relation to different issues, such as knowledge translation and partisan positions, and highlight key points that might help newcomers start thinking with the new.
Abstract: Having recently emerged as an intellectual project, new materialism (NM) is extending to different fields, including sport, exercise and health studies. However, it is still unclear why and how NM is new, which can jeopardise its potential impact in academia and society. The aim of this paper is to discuss the newness of NM and to explore how it plays out in relation to different issues, such as knowledge translation and partisan positions. At the same time, NM is used as a way of understanding my own positionality as a newcomer who is becoming an academic within a field having manifold intellectual debates while being shaped by a neoliberal rationality. Reasons as to why NM has to be more concerned about accessibility are provided, and a case for a receptive yet suspicious attitude towards the label ‘new’ is made. Several key points that might help newcomers start thinking with the ‘new’ are also highlighted. Next, an example of NM in action is presented. This section illuminates what NM brings t...

TL;DR: A review of seminal philosophy of science papers dealing with ontological and epistemological assumptions of, and relation between, natural and social science can be found in this article, where the authors highlight the link between ontological/epistemology assumptions and methodological choices in social science.
Abstract: Purpose Much of the contemporary methodological literature tends to be self-referential and frequently ignorant of the breadth and depth of philosophical assumptions underpinning various methodological positions. Without a clear understanding of the philosophical underpinnings, logically deriving applicable validity criteria becomes very difficult (if not impossible). As a result, the purpose of this paper is to present a critical review of historical and more recent philosophical arguments for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research in social science. Design/methodology/approach A targeted review of seminal philosophy of science papers dealing with ontological and epistemological assumptions of, and relation between, natural and social science. Findings The paper highlights the link between ontological/epistemological assumptions and methodological choices in social science. Key differences between the natural and social science are discussed and situated within the main paradigms. Originality/value The paper draws attention to a range of difficulties associated with the adoption of the natural sciences and the related positivist approaches as a role model for work in the social sciences. Unique contributions of interpretive and critical approaches are highlighted. The paper may be of value to scholars who are interested in the historical context of the still-ongoing qualitative-quantitative debate.
