TLDR
A method that allows increasing the representable amount of information, depending on its density is presented that makes use of the diffusion algorithm that is used to create value-by-area cartograms.
Abstract
Cartographic visualisation of the literary space is facing a major challenge resulting from different levels of detail within which the textual descriptions of settings are made by authors. Those range between very detailed descriptions within parts of a city to spatially spread events within a country, or long journeys across continents. Depending on the fictional texts, fictional action often concentrates on a few main places, resulting in high information density – in the form of various individual settings. As well, they are also embedded in a larger environment. When interactively analysing or choosing a section to print a literary map with individual spatial elements, the user has to choose a map scale, which will result in the output of either a detailed representation of a main place or the geographical overview of the fictional space having a small level of detail. However, it would be a great advantage to receive as much information as possible from one single map view. In order to achie...

Cartographic Design as Visual Storytelling: Synthesis and Review of Map-Based Narratives, Genres, and Tropes

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review considerations and techniques for approaching cartographic design as visual storytelling and show that stories, like maps, are a method for documenting and explaining, for meaningfully explaining.

Mapping intangibilities in creative tourism territories through tangible objects: a methodological approach for developing creative tourism offers

TL;DR: The CREATOUR project as mentioned in this paper proposes to use cultural mapping through objects as a way for regional actors to discover what is "so special" about their places and link tourism offers with the communities in which they take place.

Comic Strip Narratives in Time Geography

TL;DR: This paper argues for introducing elements of comic art into cartography, specifically the mapped comic, with an illustrated strip literally plotted and placed in a 3D time geographic virtual world.

Visualizing regional clusters of Sardinia's EU supported agriculture: A Spatial Fuzzy Partitioning Around Medoids

TL;DR: In this article, a spatial approach is suggested, namely an approach that considers geography as a factor in measuring the success of such policy, and a geographical approach can be used to pinpoint "hotspots" in order to determine an appropriate distribution of funds.

Computing with many spaces: Generalizing projections for the digital geohumanities and GIScience

TL;DR: This work suggests an approach to pluralizing the spaces available to geographic computation, and extends generalized projections to encompass spatial multiplicity, fragmented spaces, wormholes, and an expanded role for interruptions.

Diffusion-based method for producing density-equalizing maps

TL;DR: The method is conceptually simple and produces useful, elegant, and easily readable maps and is illustrated with applications to the results of the 2000 U.S. presidential election, lung cancer cases in the State of New York, and the geographical distribution of stories appearing in the news.

TL;DR: The evolution of a continuous projection for portraying the area of territorial units in proportion to a thematic variable has, in the past, eluded the cartographer as discussed by the authors, and the present paper describes the development of such a projection and some of the possible applications.
