Day ahead scheduling of generation and storage sources in a microgrid using artificial fish swarm algorithm

Abstract: Non-consistency of energy availability from Renewable Energy Sources needs estimation and scheduling in advance so that the other certain sources of energy like fuel cells, diesel generators, storage devices etc, can be scheduled appropriately to maintain load-generation balance in real time Evolutionary program techniques are proving handy and reliable in the process This article uses an Artificial Fish Swarm algorithm to solve the problem of day-ahead scheduling of generation in a mix of Renewable Energy Sources, despatchable sources and storage The utility function of hourly generation cost is considered for optimization along with various microgrid operational constraints The performance of the algorithm is validated by applying to schedule generation in a microgrid in grid connected mode consisting of one wind turbine and one PV source as Renewable energy sources, one diesel generator and fuel cell as despatchable generators and a battery for storage The scheduled generation of each generator, power exchange of storage source along with its state of charge are evaluated for optimum cost of generation

Abstract: This paper presents an application of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm for minimizing the total generation cost in microgrid system within 24 h. The microgrid system consists of conventional and renewable energy power plants are considered in this project. The main objective is to minimize the generation cost while satisfied the load demand and system constraints. This case study consists of three fuel cells, two diesel generators and two wind turbines. The proposed PSO algorithm has been simulated in Matlab software to determine optimal generation cost. The results are compared with other existing algorithms to validate performances of PSO in term of minimizing generation cost in microgrid. It found that the PSO algorithm gives the lower optimal cost compared to other methods.

Abstract: The increasing interest in integrating intermittent renewable energy sources into microgrids presents major challenges from the viewpoints of reliable operation and control. In this paper, the major issues and challenges in microgrid control are discussed, and a review of state-of-the-art control strategies and trends is presented; a general overview of the main control principles (e.g., droop control, model predictive control, multi-agent systems) is also included. The paper classifies microgrid control strategies into three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary, where primary and secondary levels are associated with the operation of the microgrid itself, and tertiary level pertains to the coordinated operation of the microgrid and the host grid. Each control level is discussed in detail in view of the relevant existing technical literature.

Abstract: Recent research shows that 20%-30% of building energy consumption can be saved through optimized operation and management without changing the building structure and the hardware configuration of the energy supply system. Therefore, there is a huge potential for building energy savings through efficient operation. Microgrid technology provides an opportunity and a desirable infrastructure for improving the efficiency of energy consumption in buildings. The key to improve building energy efficiency in operation is to coordinate and optimize the operation of various energy sources and loads. In this paper, the scheduling problem of building energy supplies is considered with the practical background of a low energy building. The objective function is to minimize the overall cost of electricity and natural gas for a building operation over a time horizon while satisfying the energy balance and complicated operating constraints of individual energy supply equipment and devices. The uncertainties are captured and their impact is analyzed by the scenario tree method. Numerical testing is performed with the data of the pilot low energy building. The testing results show that significant energy cost savings can be achieved through integrated scheduling and control of various building energy supply sources. It is very important to fully utilize solar energy and optimize the operation of electrical storage. It is also shown that precooling is a simple way to achieve energy savings.

Abstract: The authors present a new method to solve the problem of economic power dispatch with piecewise quadratic cost function using the Hopfield neural network. Traditionally one convex cost function for each generator is assumed. However, it is more realistic to represent the cost function as a piecewise quadratic function rather than one convex function. In this study, multiple intersecting cost functions are used for each unit. Through case studies, the possibility of the application of the Hopfield neural network to the economic load dispatch problem with general nonconvex cost functions was shown. The proposed approach is much simpler and the results are very close to those of the numerical method. >

Abstract: The first notable feature of this book is its innovation: Computational intelligence (CI), a fast evolving area, is currently attracting lots of researchers attention in dealing with many complex problems. At present, there are quite a lot competing books existing in the market. Nevertheless, the present book is markedly different from the existing books in that it presents new paradigms of CI that have rarely mentioned before, as opposed to the traditional CI techniques or methodologies employed in other books. During the past decade, a number of new CI algorithms are proposed. Unfortunately, they spread in a number of unrelated publishing directions which may hamper the use of such published resources. These provide us with motivation to analyze the existing research for categorizing and synthesizing it in a meaningful manner. The mission of this book is really important since those algorithms are going to be a new revolution in computer science. We hope it will stimulate the readers to make novel contributions or even start a new paradigm based on nature phenomena.
