Decision policy scenarios for just-in-sequence (JIS) deliveries

Abstract: Purpose: The Just-in-Sequence (JIS) approach is evidencing advantages in efficiently managing variety-driven costs, and reducing the risk of disruption in sourcing, manufacturing companies and third-party logistics. This has increased its implementation in the manufacturing industry, especially in highly customized manufacturing sectors such as the automotive industry. However, despite its growing interest by manufacturers, scholarly research focused on JIS still remains limited. In this context, little has been done to study the effect of JIS on the fluidity of supply chains and processes of logistics suppliers as well as providing them with a decision making tool to optimise the sequencing of their deliveries. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to propose a genetic algorithm to evaluate different decision policy scenarios to reduce risks of supply disruptions at the final assembly line. Consequently, an algorithm considering a periodic review of the inventory that assumes a steady demand and short response times is developed and applied. Design/methodology/approach: Based on a literature review and real-life information, an abductive reasoning was performed and a case study application of the proposed algorithm conducted in the auto-industry. Findings: The results obtained from the case study indicate that the proposed genetic algorithm offers a reliable solution when facing variability in safety stocks that operate under assumptions such as: i) fixed costs; ii) high inventory turnover; iii) scarce previous information available concerning material requirements; and iv) replenishment services as core business value. Although the results are based on an auto-industry case study, they are equally applicable to other global supply chains. Originality/value: This paper is of interest to practitioners and academics alike as it complements and supports the very limited scholarly research on JIS by providing manufacturers and 3PL suppliers competing in mass customized industries and markets a tool to support decision-making. Implications for the design of modern supply chain fluidity in the manufacturing industry are also exposed and future research streams presented.

Abstract: Travel time reliability is one of the most important assets when it comes to designing and assessing freight fluidity of transportation systems. Guaranteeing reliable delivery times is, according to different international studies, a strategic competitive advantage. Nonetheless, emerging countries such as Mexico, do not currently count with specific indicators to measure travel time reliability from a freight fluidity approach. As such, there is no clear measurement of the impact and propagation of the variability of transit times throughout the supply chains. Since road transportation is the main mean of transportation in emerging countries, the aim of this paper is to present the analysis carried out to measure the travel time reliability thanks to different methodologies based on freight data collection using GPS (Global Positioning System), as a key element to assess freight fluidity in freight transportation corridors. The analysis measured items such as: (i) percentiles of travel time; (ii) planning time index; (iii) buffer time index; (iv) skew and range of travel. Different probability distributions were analysed and the distribution of travel time data was determined through statistical hypothesis test. The conclusion was that distributions with upper tails longer than usual fit better to the collected data. Evidences of mixture distributions in the travel time data were also found. Finally, the paper also presents useful conclusions to develop future research as well as to improve practices for decision makers.

Abstract: The available and future solutions for the digital transformation and use of exponential technologies indicate revolutionary changes in the whole supply chain of manufacturing and service processes. The vertical networking of smart manufacturing systems and the horizontal integration of value-making chains led to a new supply paradigm based on hyperconnected global logistics systems. The goal of the paper is to identify challenges of just-in-sequence supply in the automotive industry from the aspect of Industry 4.0 solutions. The authors introduce readers in both the Industry 4.0 paradigm as well as the just-in-sequence supply. Defining the conception of cyber physical logistics systems (CPLS) authors describe the I4.0 solutions based relations between just-in-sequence supply and Reference Architecture Model Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0). The main goal is to define challenges and impacts of Industry 4.0 paradigm on just-in-sequence supply.
