Abstract: In an effort to develop a complete DSRC system for ITS application, the authors have studied a lot of experimental facts which they are exploiting for the design. The wireless technology has been chosen properly which is capable of tackling the severe interferences present in the open road. For road to car communication, a combined digital technology like spread spectrum along with diversity reception will help a lot in this regard. Accordingly, the choice is for FHSS based space diversity system which will utilize carrier frequency around 5.8 GHz ISM band with available bandwidth of 80 MHz and no license. For efficient design, the radio channel is characterized on which the design is based. To have the full DSRC system, a fixed wireless connectivity at Ku band is also explored for road side base station to master switching center connectivity.

TL;DR: A cooperative load balancing approach among RSUs is proposed, in which an RSU can transfer the overload requests to other RSUs, which outperforms the non-cooperative (stand-alone) approaches in a wide range of scenarios based on performance metrics.
Abstract: For overcoming the vehicle to vehicle frequent disconnection problem in VANETs data dissemination, several approaches have been proposed, including the provision of Road Side Units (RSUs). Due to the short wireless transmission range of RSUs and vehicle mobility, a vehicle spends only a short period of time inside the range of an RSU. This limitation, together with possible overload of RSUs sited near busy road junctions, may mean that requests from vehicles are not served within the prescribed deadlines. In this paper, we propose a cooperative load balancing approach among RSUs, in which an RSU can transfer the overload requests to other RSUs. Load transfer is done based on a number of factors: request delay tolerance, current load of the transferee RSU, and the direction in which the vehicle is heading. Using a series of simulation experiments, we demonstrate that the proposed cooperative load balancing approach outperforms the non-cooperative (stand-alone) approaches in a wide range of scenarios based on our performance metrics.

TL;DR: A Privacy Preserving Revocation mechanism (PPREM) based on a universal one-way accumulator provides explicit, concise, authenticated and unforgeable information about the revocation status of each certificate while preserving the users' privacy.
Abstract: One of the critical security issues of Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) is the revocation of misbehaving vehicles. While essential, revocation checking can leak potentially sensitive information. Road Side Units (RSUs) receiving the certificate status queries could infer the identity of the vehicles posing the query. An important loss of privacy results from the RSUs ability to tie the checking vehicle with the query's target. We propose a Privacy Preserving Revocation mechanism (PPREM) based on a universal one-way accumulator. PPREM provides explicit, concise, authenticated and unforgeable information about the revocation status of each certificate while preserving the users' privacy.

TL;DR: This paper proposes a collaborative certificate status checking mechanism called COACH to efficiently distribute certificate revocation information in VANETs and proposes an extension to the COACH mechanism called EvCOACH that is more efficient than COACH in scenarios with relatively low revocation rates per CRL validity period.
Abstract: Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) require mechanisms to authenticate messages, identify valid vehicles, and remove misbehaving vehicles. A public key infrastructure (PKI) can be used to provide these functionalities using digital certificates. However, if a vehicle is no longer trusted, its certificates have to be revoked and this status information has to be made available to other vehicles as soon as possible. In this paper, we propose a collaborative certificate status checking mechanism called COACH to efficiently distribute certificate revocation information in VANETs. In COACH, we embed a hash tree in each standard Certificate Revocation List (CRL). This dual structure is called extended-CRL. A node possessing an extended-CRL can respond to certificate status requests without having to send the complete CRL. Instead, the node can send a short response (less than 1 kB) that fits in a single UDP message. Obviously, the substructures included in the short responses are authenticated. This means that any node possessing an extended-CRL can produce short responses that can be authenticated (including Road Side Units or intermediate vehicles). We also propose an extension to the COACH mechanism called EvCOACH that is more efficient than COACH in scenarios with relatively low revocation rates per CRL validity period. To build EvCOACH, we embed an additional hash chain in the extended-CRL. Finally, by conducting a detailed performance evaluation, COACH and EvCOACH are proved to be reliable, efficient, and scalable.

TL;DR: Two secure and privacy-preserving 3D positioning schemes based on vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) and vehicle- to-vehicle (V1V) communications, respectively are proposed, based on the round trip time ranging technique which is used to achieve 3D position.
Abstract: Industrial wireless networks (IWNs) have applications in areas such as critical infrastructure sectors and manufacturing industries such as car manufacturing. In car manufacturing, IWNs can facilitate manufacturers to improve the design of the vehicles by collecting vehicular status and other related data (such an IWN is also known as vehicular ad hoc networks—VANETs). Vehicle positioning is a key functionality in VANETs. Most existing vehicle positioning systems are capable of providing accurate 2D positioning, but the demand for accurate 3D positioning has increased sharply in recent times (e.g., due to the building of more elevated roads). There are, however, security and privacy concerns relating to 3D positioning systems in VANET. In this paper, we propose two secure and privacy-preserving 3D positioning schemes based on vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, respectively. Our schemes are based on the round trip time ranging technique which is used to achieve 3D position. The security and the privacy of vehicles in our schemes are guaranteed through a newly designed one-pass authenticated key agreement protocol. Using experiments, we show that a vehicle can determine whether it is on or under an elevated road in a short period of time.

Abstract: A breadboard CDMA digital cellular system was developed by QUALCOMM and demonstrated in San Diego in November 1989. In February 1990, an extensive technical field trial was carried out in midtown Manhattan with NYNEX Mobile. For the purposes of carrying out the CDMA trials and demonstrations, a total of three cell-site and two mobile prototype units were built. In each case, the demonstration system utilized two actual cell sites and one mobile and included A/B comparisons with the commercial analog system. The fundamental features of CDMA, such as power control and soft handoff, were tested and proven in a variety of field conditions. The authors describe the CDMA signal and waveform design, the CDMA system design, CDMA power control, and additional features of CDMA. >

TL;DR: In this article, a prototype of the ultrawideband (UWB) radar has been developed by Russian UWB group researchers at the Moscow Aviation Institute at "analog and digital radio systems" department (www.uwbgroup.ru).
Abstract: Here, we present a description of a block scheme, characteristics, specific features of design and results of testing for a prototype of the ultrawideband (UWB) radar, which has been developed by Russian UWB group researchers at Moscow Aviation Institute at "analog and digital radio systems" department (www.uwbgroup.ru). The prototype was designed within a research work, which we are conducting on the state order from one of Russian federation state institutions. The UWB radar is intended for detection of moving targets at a distance of several kilometers. The radar design is divided into two stages. In the first stage, we have produced a radar prototype, which incorporates a low power narrow-pulse generator (NPG). During laboratory test, the prototype has afforded the detection of moving targets at the distance of up to one hundred meters. Thereby, the validity of technical solutions used for the whole radar's and radar unit's design was confirmed. In the second stage, we plan to conduct field tests of the radar prototype equipped with a high power NPG.
