TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the practical aspects of the use of interpreters during interviews, a subject that is often taken even more for granted than transla tion of psychiatric measures.
Abstract: languages. Understandably, there is de tailed and important description of the practical aspects of the use of interpreters during interviews, a subject that is often taken even more for granted than transla tion of psychiatric measures. The section on depression and culture is an excellent and comprehensive account of the subject and covers the perplexing findings that depres sion, once thought to be rare in Africa, is now found to be more common than in the West. Other topics well covered include the methods and processes of biomédicaland traditional diagnoses of mental disorders and the variety of health practitioners who are accessed for mental health problems in southern Africa. The two great qualities of this book are its style of writing, and its balanced presentation of arguments and facts. The style is intensely personal, reflecting at each corner the intimate experience in teaching, research and service provision of the author's long and committed involvement

TL;DR: The first few months of life anxiety is predominantly experienced as fear of persecution and that this contributes to certain mechanisms and defenses which characterize the paranoid and schizoid positions as mentioned in this paper, which are part of normal development and at the same time form the basis for later schizophrenic illness.
Abstract: I propose to summarize some of the conclusions presented in this paper. One of my main points was the suggestion that in the first few months of life anxiety is predominantly experienced as fear of persecution and that this contributes to certain mechanisms and defenses which characterize the paranoid and schizoid positions. Outstanding among these defenses is the mechanism of splitting internal and external objects, emotions, and the ego. These mechanisms and defenses are part of normal development and at the same time form the basis for later schizophrenic illness. I described the processes underlying identification by projection as a combination of splitting off parts of the self and projecting them on to another person, and some of the effects this identification has on normal and schizoid object relations. The onset of the depressive position is the juncture at which by regression schizoid mechanisms may be reinforced. I also suggested a close connection between the manic-depressive and schizoid disorders, based on the interaction between the infantile schizoid and depressive positions.

TL;DR: Bion's central thesis is that for the study of people, whether individually or in groups, a cardinal requisite is accurate observation, accompanied by accurate appreciation and formulation of the observations so made as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Bion's central thesis in this volume is that for the study of people, whether individually or in groups, a cardinal requisite is accurate observation, accompanied by accurate appreciation and formulation of the observations so made. The study represents a further development of a theme introduced in the author's earlier works, particularly in Elements of Psychoanalysis (1963) and Transformations (1965). Bion's concern with the subject stems directly from his psycho-analytic experience and reflects his endeavor to overcome, in a scientific frame of reference, the immense difficulty of observing, assessing, and communicating non-sensuous experience. Here, he lays emphasis on he overriding importance of attending to the realities of mental phenomena as they manifest themselves in the individual or group under study. In influences that interpose themselves between the observer and the subject of his scrutiny giving rise to opacity, are examined, together with ways of controlling them. Problems of language are considered: In order to express and communicate, the analyst is obliged to use words and formulations deriving from a background of sensuous experience and designed for a different task. Furthermore, the author says "It is too often forgotten that the gift of speech, so centrally employed, has been elaborated s much for the purpose of concealing thought by dissimulation and lying as for the purpose of elucidating or communicating thought".The practical value of this volume for those engaged in psycho-analytic work is self-evident; furthermore, its implications extend to many other areas of study. The discussion is wide-ranging: based on Kleinian theory, it encompasses theological dogma and mathematics, and the relationships between these fields. In particular, an attempt is made to show the analogy of certain psychological concepts with mathematical formulations such as set theory.Readers already familiar with Bion's work will welcome this further statement of his views. Those encountering his writing for the first time will at once perceive the originality of his approach and the precision of his theoretical exposition.

TL;DR: The Culture of Narcissism by the intellectual historian Christopher Lasch started off with an indictment of the awareness movement for betraying the New Left counterculture from which it sprang as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The big-selling Culture of Narcissism by the intellectual historian Christopher Lasch started off with an indictment of the “awareness movement” for betraying the New Left counterculture from which it sprang. The Protestant work ethic stood as one of the most important underpinnings of American culture. The spirit of self-improvement lived on, in debased form, in the cult of “self-culture”—proper care and training of mind and body, nurture of the mind through “great books,” development of “character.” The Culture of Narcissism, like its predecessor, Haven in a Heartless World, has much more information about social-science theories of the family than about family life itself. In a society in which the dream of success has been drained of any meaning beyond itself, men have nothing against which to measure their achievements except the achievements of others. The fear that haunted the social critics and theorists of fifties—that rugged individualism had succumbed to conformity and “low-pressure sociability”—appears in retrospect to have been premature.
