Dependence of rain integral parameters on measured rain drop velocities at a tropical location

Abstract: A study using a Laser Precipitation Monitor (LPM) for several rain events spanning the monsoon season of 2013 at Kolkata, India, reflects the effect of velocity measurements on Z-R and A-R relationship for both convective and stratiform events. Laser precipitation monitor measures ground based drop size distribution and drop velocity simultaneously. The presence of high velocity small drops (super-terminal) and low velocity large drops (sub-terminal) is abundantly experienced during different types of rain in the tropical region as observed by a Laser precipitation monitor (LPM). The number fraction of these drops is higher in convective rain than in stratiform rain. As the observed drop velocities show significant variation from the theoretically derived velocities, it is possible to get noticeable difference in rain rate calculations, Z-R and A-R relationships. The study involves a comparison of Z-R and A-R relations using both Gunn-Kinzer (GK) and actual observed velocity in convective and stratiform rain regimes separately as there was significant difference in number fraction of high velocity and low velocity rain drops in both the cases.

Abstract: A network of optical disdrometers (including laser precipitation monitors and a two-dimensional video disdrometer) was utilized to determine whether the recent reports of “superterminal” raindrops were spurious results of drop breakup occurring on instrumentation. Results unequivocally show that superterminal raindrops at small (less than 1 mm) sizes are ubiquitous, are measurable over an extended area, and appear in every rain event investigated. No evidence was found to suggest that superterminal drops are the result of drop breakup due to impact with the measurement instrument; thus, if the superterminal drops are the result of drop fragmentation, this fragmentation happens in the ambient atmosphere during all rain events measured in this study. The ubiquity of superterminal drops at small drop sizes raises natural questions regarding rain accumulation estimations, estimates of drop size distributions, and erosion characterization.

Abstract: . It has recently been shown that at high rainfall intensities, small raindrops may fall with much larger velocities than would be expected from their diameters. These were argued to be fragments of recently broken-up larger drops. In this paper we quantify the effect of this phenomenon on raindrop size distribution measurements from a Joss-Waldvogel disdrometer, a 2-D Video Distrometer, and a vertically-pointing Doppler radar. Probability distributions of fall velocities have been parameterized, where the parameters are functions of both rainfall intensity and drop size. These parameterizations have been used to correct Joss-Waldvogel disdrometer measurements for this phenomenon. The effect of these corrections on fitted scaled drop size distributions are apparent but not major. Fitted gamma distributions for three different types of rainfall have been used to simulate drop size measurements. The effect of the high-velocity small drops is shown to be minor. Especially for the purpose of remote sensing of rainfall using radar, microwave links, or optical links, the errors caused by using the slightly different retrieval relations will be masked completely by other error sources.
